Considering a lift and bigger wheels on ‘22 Limited

I have a 2022 Limited and I love it. Found a couple good shops near me willing to do the work. One wants to use Bilstein 5100 the other wants to use either the Dobinson IMS or MMR. I realize I’m comparing apples to oranges to an extent. We can get into that.

However, I’m curious how lifts and new bigger wheels and tires are going to effect my on road drive/ride quality? I’m going to be on paved roads 99.9% of the time. What I really want is a more aggressive look while also having the ability to off-road.

Any info on your experience is really appreciated.

 

If you’re going to be on paved roads 99.9% of the time, as you stated, I’d just put some 17” rims on with your choice of 265 AT tires to give it a more aggressive look. A suspension lift would be a waste of money.

Slopemaster makes a good point. These vehicles are fully capable of your .01% off-road. Aftermarket wheels and 265s may be the easiest/best route.

On the other hand, I lifted my 4runner with a Dobinsons lift and put 285s on it. I didn’t lose much drivability on the road (actually rides nicer than stock suspension), but I did lose MPGs if that’s a concern of yours. If you decide to lift yours, you should also include upper control arms to make sure you can get your alignment numbers within spec.

 

I wasn’t trying to pop your bubble but I off road quite a bit, nothing extreme, and I can get anywhere I want to go with just good quality AT tires.

With my experience non of the suspension lifts gave me the comfort I got with the XREAS. As said above may be try 17in wheels and standard load tire options to see how much you can enjoy with the Limited. If you still feel like you need a little lift front work with a Toyota specialized 4x4 shop (not a generic shop, a shop who is an expert in Toyota vehicles) to add a spacer on top of the strut with out damaging the XREAS lines.

If you still think you need bigger lift then look at suspension lift options like Dobinson MMR with 3way adjusters. I have tried ELKA 2.5 DC (2way adjusters) which my 4x4shop said the most comfortable suspension (more than popular Kings) on my 4Runner. Yet its really comfortable offroad but not comfy as XREAS on pavement imo. True that on Youtube people remove Kings and install ELKAs and say how good they are, but to me in pavement its not comfy as XREAS.

Right now I'm running Ironman FCP on my Limited. They are OK suspension.

Would I go back to XREAS? No, I absolute love the look of my Limited with lift and bigger 17in wheels and tires. So I trade my XREAS comfort to somewhat OK comfort and looks.

 

Your Limited has XREAS suspension. It is an excellent suspension for a daily driver who is mostly on pavement. As was suggested, dump $2000 or so on some 17” wheels and some AT tires and have fun.

 

Looks like a sweet ride. Not popping my bubble at all. You guys are all making sense. I can always lift later. Why not try the bigger wheels and tires? I can always upgrade to bigger tires post lift.

Couple thoughts here:

First, the stock 20" rims on the Limited are already pushing it. That's a lot of extra weight for no purpose other than looks. I went with 17" TRD Pro rims and AT tires on my Limited and love both the look and the increase in function. To put something bigger than 20s on there really, IMHO, makes the 4Runner a bit silly. What does it accomplish beyond adding rotating weight and reducing the amount of tire sidewall you have for handling potholes and the like?

Second, you mention bigger tires. You can only go slightly bigger without having the tires rub inside the wheel wells. It may seem counter intuitive but a lift does not necessarily cure this problem. Most guys need to start cutting stuff off to fit big tires.

Third, as kmeeg mentioned, by having a Limited you have a wonderfully good suspension. If you lift and go with something else you risk adding all kinds of brake dive and body roll.

If your goal is a better look, the smartest thing is probably to actually go down in wheel size, to 17s or 18s, and to very slightly larger than stock tires with an aggressive look. For example, 17" TRD Pro wheels with 275 ATs....

 

We have a 2017 Limited with Dobinsons IMS and 265/70/17 and a 2021 Limited with Xreas and 285/70/17. The Dobinsons is softer on road and feels better off-road (the few times we took it there before the babies) than Xreas. I would take Xreas any day for on road driving though. The 32.8” have softened up the Xreas rig enough that we choose that for any driving where we have to pick between the two.

I agree with most on here. I’m mostly on the road and went with 17” wheels and 265/70R17 BF Goodrich Trail Terrain T/A’s on my 2016 Limited. Also threw on 1/2” cornfed spacers to level the front out a bit. Definitely gives it a more aggressive look.

 

@4RP - three times you mentioned 'bigger wheels'. The wheels you have are 20"...are you referring to just larger diameter tires? I don't think you want bigger than 20" wheels, in fact most of the suggestions are to go smaller, to a 17" wheel...

I have a 2018 Limited and decided to go 17” as well with an oem 265/70/17 tire size. Went with ORP oem wheels which I located a set of 5 in great shape to include the spare for $500.

 

Maybe my favorite wheel. I have a 2019 TRDOR so I have these wheels, too. Looks great on your Limited. Another and maybe less-expensive option for OP.

I'm running 285/70R17 with Ironman lift.

 

Daddykool I think they were the best looking wheels for the limited for the least amount of investment. The chrome and black go with the style and the offset match the 20”. I did some rough math and figured picking up a set of 5 take offs for 500 plus the $1100 for 5 Falken Wildpeak only cost me a couple hundred more than going for 4 new high end 3 peak msf replacement oem 20” tires.

 

I'm with you on that. And the white truck gives them a little extra pop IMO. Very nice.

In my view, the Limited wheels are nice in their own way. But these 7-spoke OR wheels are my favorites.

Don’t ask me! When my xreas blew a second shock, I ditched the OE and decided to make it the 4Runner I never had as a younger lad.

I now have a bit of a beast! Not for show either.

i didn't read the whole thread, but if you want good road manners, the limited is going to be pretty dang good, and with the right tire, that limited will be fine off road, unless you are rock climbing and I would find a different ride for that.
