2022 TRD with the adaptive cruise control works great until the first snow of the season, the radar plate located on the front grill accumulated a thin film of snow/ice disabling the cruise control until you wipe it off........every 20 miles.

I'm not crazy about the tech escalation on these cars, but can't it just function as regular cruise control in conditions like that?

Yes. Hold down the button for 2 or 3 seconds and it activates traditional cruise control.

I use both kinds of cruise control. Depends on conditions. Wish the adaptive system would work at low speeds — seems to me that’s when it would be most useful, eg in bad slow moving traffic.

It doesn't snow here but using cruise in snow sounds like a bad idea to me.

When the radar is blocked, you also lose the collision avoidance system, not just radar cruise.

I’m not sure that’s a bad thing if it’s snowing, since I’m not sure how much it would help in slippery conditions.

Thanks for the info, I really do need to look in the manual more often.

    Ding ding ding!

    If it's snowing/slippery, don't use cruise.

The rare times my adaptive cruise was disabled I was not in a situation where I ever would want to use it based on the conditions

I use my cruise control when it’s snowing in certain conditions—such as when the air temperature is above freezing at the road level but below freezing where snow forms in the upper atmosphere. This results in wet heavy flakes that build up on the front end of a vehicle but don’t stick to warm roads. It’s a common occurrence in early or late winter here in Northern Michigan and we don’t panic when it happens.

I’m not a fan of the adaptive cruise control in most situations and didn’t know that it could be turned off in favor of a traditional cruise control—thanks for that tip!

I'm sure you meant to say so, but don't use cruise control in the rain either.

While the T4R might not be the best vehicle to criticize /complain about, since it has fairly low HP/Torque numbers.
Those that drive higher HP vehicles, may experience the effect of (wet/loss of traction) wheel spin in CC mode.
I, for one, rarely use CC because I rather be in control of my own throttle input and not rely on a radars, 'looking ahead for traffic' sensors.

But I'm all for finding a stick on the side of the road to jam the throttle pedal down on an old Cat 950 Loader while roading an uphill grade (at 4mph) for the next few miles.

I think it was Honda a few years ago whose cruise control would not turn on if the wipers were in use.

Interesting. While I'm not a fan of big brother making decisions for me, I can see where some people do. I don't and won't have a vehicle with TSS. I pay attention. But I'm an old man and won't be around by the time my trucks are worn out. Just my .02 cents.

This happens to every radar that is not heated. But it doesn't really matter because you shouldn't be using cruise control in the snow anyway

Discovered this fun tech scenario this evening…

#1) cruise control in a snow or rain storm is absolutely a terrible idea. Had a HS friend ~30 years ago hydroplane & roll during a rain storm with cruise control on… luckily she survived…

I my case today, I drove thru a snowstorm in my ‘23 ORP and, upon exiting the storm, I was greeted by a glimpse of sun before sunset & 99% dry roads… sensor was still caked in snow & WTF error ensued until I stopped & cleared the sensor.

Had the exact same question as many of you, and this workaround answered that! Thanks!

In summary, definitely do not use cruise control while driving thru a snow/rain storm. But, as a grown a$$ adult, override the tech and go analog when appropriate ;)

I don't remember what year they started, but believe it was Honda. The cruise control won't work any time the windshield wipers are on.
