Blown motor after timing belt breaks

    My timing belt broke, I’d towed my vehicle to the mechanic. he called me today stating that my engine is blown. I was under the impression that this year is considered a non-interfering motor but also the timing belt is exterior. What could’ve made the motor blow? Is this a common issue when the timing belt goes? Finally is it worth putting in a rebuild or a new motor? this is my daily driver. Favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned. Has approximately 200+ thousand miles on it. Regularly maintained

    RSG sliders, Yakima offgrid basket, Pro-Comp wheels, SOS Streamline bumper and skids, Warn VR EVO10S winch + Ultimate Sidewinder, Bilstein 6112 + 5100 + rear lift coils, Rigid Dually SS ditch lights w/Caliraised brackets and OEM style dash switch
    I can't confirm whether that's an interference motor or not.

    But, it's probably worth fixing if it's in otherwise good shape.

    Do you trust this mechanic?

    The 5VZ is not an interference engine, so the belt breaking shouldnt have caused a "blown motor" - I would ask for more information, did something in the motor seize that caused the belt to break? I agree on do you trust this mechanic? definitely get more info, and pending response, a second opinion. That being said Im all about rebuild/replace if you have the means and time

    With the response you've gotten thus far, I would be very suspicious. Did you overheat when it happened? or pull off and shut down?

    Never overheated in the three years I’ve had it. I was driving up to about 40 from a stop and the gas stopped responding , power steering went and I pulled over and stopped the engine. Having it towed back home and getting 2nd opinion. He’s done work for me and is trusted but has been wrong in the past.

    I have not seen the Timing belt breakage result in a "blown" motor on the 5VZ, What I have seen is a cam shaft lock up for whatever reason then that resulted in timing belt breaking.

    My guess is your mechanic discovered your timing belt broken, and your engine locked up. When the belt breaks it can cause all sorts of havoc. Bent valve stems are one of the main results.
    I would at the very least get a second opinion, unless you know for sure this guy knows what he’s talking about.

    The 3.4 is non-interference, so can't get bent valves from a timing belt break.

    OK so I’m getting it to turn only about half way. However the rods and pistons everything are fine. Also come to find out the timing belt had been changed a few years ago. Which makes sense because there was no wear on the belt, it was just snapped. So the I’m assuming the camshaft did lock up. How plausible is it that the oil pump would be responsible for that?

    I definitely don’t trust the mechanic. The main mechanic who I use and owns the shop is gone on family emergency. When I got my truck back they left dirty shop rags, the foot booties, Threw everything from the back to the front, put all the parts in the back on top of the carpet. Radiator Completely unprotected. I don’t even know where half the bolts and screws are. Total bullshit

    Not possible on a 3400, which all 2002 4Runners have. The cam can lock up or the belt break, and nothing will be hurt inside the engine.

    What do you mean?

    What are you turning?

    The CAM?

    The Crank?

    Now that the belt is broken...the CAMs turn independently of the CRANK.

    The crank shaft won’t turn all the way.
    What else would make it lock up? Was thinking maybe the oil pump??

    If the crank won't turn, then that's not sounding good. I wonder if you lunched a valve or something.
