Before I go down the rabbit hole of looking at the dimensions of the plethora of available cargo racks out there, I was hoping to tap you guys to see if you know of any that are no higher than the existing OEM rails. I'm asking because right now, the 4R barely clears the garage door with maybe an inch to spare. Thanks ahead of time for any input.

In the title of your message you use the term “basket” while in the body of your message you say “rack”. Which are you asking about?

X2. Because, baskets generally mount on top of a roof rack, not replace it.

    Tinted fronts, blacked out overlays.
Check out the Crossbars at LFD Offroad, might be what you’re looking for and I think they have a Discount right now.

Many with many more to go
    Terms:

Roof Rails - The two OEM "rails" that run front to back on the roof as form the factory.

Crossbars - The bars that can be mounted that connect the two rails across the roof. Can be adjusted to many locations and you can use several of them to distribute weight.

Roof basket - Can be OEM or aftermarket. A separate basket that typically mounts to the crossbars. Thule, Yakima and 400 others are availble on Amazon, etc.

Roof rack - Aftermarket only. Replaces both the Rails and Crossbars into several different sizes. Gobi (tubular), UpTop, Cali Raised, Wescott, Prinsu (extruded aluminum).

Roof "baskets" can be mounted to or on both racks and crossbars. If a basket is mounted to something, it will always be taller than rails or racks. Personally, I'm not a fan of baskets. Too little to be functional in most cases. Racks can run the full length of the rig and have infintely more flexability to mount kayaks to roof top tens, bins, Aunt Edna and petulant children.

Super sorry, I wasn't very clear. I meant the racks that replace the rails and/or crossbars. My wife wants another dog, and I'm trying to figure out a future way to carry our gear for weekend trips while fitting two larger dogs on the cargo area, and I thought a rack would work. The biggest hurdle is getting one that will let me continue to store the vehicle in the the garage between trips. If it's 2 inches higher than the existing OEM rails, I'm kind of screwed.

@Overland WT, thanks for the list of rack manufacturers, I'll check into them and start comparing dimensions.

Just be aware that if you like what Gobi offers, it may be 2024 before you can use it for a trip.

I think given your height restraints your best bet is to get 4 or 5 crossbars that work with the factory rails Greenlane Offroad and both make crossbars that are flush with the top of the factory rails.

Once you have those you can attach a basket or cargo boxes that would be removed when it’s time for the 4Runner to go in the garage.

I 2nd this if you barely fit in the garage. I have a gobi stealth but I think even with low rise option it's about 4" above stock height. If you want extra storage I'd look at a hard or soft case you can throw up top outside of the garage for extra space

I have the factory Roof Rack and Crossbars. Almost touching the garage doors rollers.
The truck barely fits in even with the side mirrors extended.
I normally close the side mirrors when backing out
