Hey upperleftadventureguy - you just must have better hearing than the rest of us and as long as you’re happy, it’s all good. Mine doesn’t whine, and if it starts to, it will probably be a prelude of things to come. Btw, the time to fix things is before they fail, as in preventative maintenance.

Maybe I do have good hearing. Along with most people / shops /overland companies I have talked to about the whine - that work on Runners daily. I trust their word and experience. Preventive maintenance is good - ill start it once I surpass 40k.

I sold my 2011 with 116k, had engine whine it’s whole life in the upper RPM range, and it had zero issues:burnrubber: present day 4runner also has the faint whine at high RPMS. No prelude of failure:hattip:

    Hi,
I have a 2014 4Runner Trail. I am experiencing the same whining noise as posted here in the video above. I have been to Toyota and they have replaced upper right, lower right and driver side idler pulleys. Also replaced the alternator. Now they are putting on a new power steering pump tomorrow. I am not confident it is the steering pump as of yet since none of the other fixes worked. Has anyone come to any additional conclusions?

Did you get this figured out? Mine has it too, and thought it was just normal. But now I am interested as we have mixed responses.

No, haven’t figured it out yet. The dealer in my hometown won’t listen to me and says it’s a normal sound because they can’t figure it out. When I mentioned to check the bearing in the sprocket like someone has mentioned above they wouldn’t hear me out. That bearing makes sense to me because it’s part of the pulley and they keep changing the pulley’s with no success. Next stop it Toyota in the city where I’m insisting they look into that. I’ll update if that made any difference.

    To date I’ve changed:
    Upper idle pulley
    Lower idle pulley
    Right idle pulley
    Alternator
    Power steering pump

The noise is the exact same no change what so ever..

Curious to see what the issue is. These engines are not a Swiss clock, they are noisy and will run forever. The only whine I hear is mine, bitching about the mpgs.

    Lol!

Mine makes a slight whining noise under acceleration, but I just assume it's part of the charm.

So safe to say it's the idle sprocket or not? Mine now whines when reving in park drive or reverse. 2020 with 47k... All factory...

My 18 ORP with 65k miles has this whine, I thought it might be a ground issue as I swapped out the head unit and speakers for one of the trail grid pro packages. I definitely notice it at start up and while driving…if it’s just a nuisance, I’ll leave it alone, but I’d like to have that documented from the dealer. Anyone else get a definitive answer on this?
