Fog lights

Looking at Morimoto XB and the KC HiLites. I have HiLites ditch lights currently and ahve run lots of other KC units in other vehicles. Morimoto gets floated around here a lot... wouldn't mind hearing about Diode Dynamics either. Not a fan of the Cali Raised design. Looks like they took a shortcut and created a round template and put their pods inside it.

 

Piggy backing on your post! I am interested in finding amber fog lights to install on my bull bar (I know, I know wtf do I have a bull bar for?). I’ll be watching this thread as well. Thinking about fog lights for driving in heavy rain here in Florida.

 

It seems that the Diode Dynamics SS3 is the all around favorite/best. That's the only one I'm considering at this point.

 

I have the Morimoto 4Banger HXB in white. They are insanely bright, but I think mildly irresponsible to use on the street. Previously had Morimoto XB and thought they were worth the money.

I'm also curious about the Diode Dynamics new offering.

I use his threads to make all my lighting decisions. I’ve had DD SS3 Pros in yellow for a while and they’re awesome. Cutoff is a little more fuzzy than the Sports, but more output. The Max version wasn’t available when I got mine.

 

I loved mine and just by chance they are for sale. Send me a PM if interested.

 

Are the DD SS3 fogs plug and play even on the trucks with OEM LED’s? (ie. Do the OEM LED fogs have a standard H11 harness?)

Do you have to specify to DD that you’re purchasing their fogs for a factory LED or halogen H11 harness?

There’s this note on the DD website and I’m not sure how to interpret:
NOTE: These lamps will not replace LED housings from the factory. If your vehicle does not have fog lamps, additional hardware and wiring may be needed for installation.

I wasn’t sure if this meant that it won’t work as an “OEM LED” replacement but will work with non-led

 

Not sure what that means. Its simple. You unplug the stock fogs. Plug the wiring harness into the DD fog and then into the stock working harness. Replace the screws that hold the fogs and done.

 

I’ve got the diode dynamics ss3 pro fogs, white with amber backlit. Absolutely love them! Plug and play. Took about an hour for install. I just wish there was a way to turn them on separately or with the bright lights on too. I’m not sure how to wire that up.

 

If you want to cut right to the chase and skip reading the very in-depth analysis in that thread, the Diode Dynamics SS3 Sport - although not the absolute most powerful - is probably the biggest bang for the buck. The new Elite series though, looks pretty darn impressive. (See Post #6130)

I had the Pro selective yellow fogs and they were awesome, but the more powerful (than the Sport) chips led to a taller and less well-defined beam pattern. On the street, this can lead to some unhappy oncoming drivers even when properly aimed. I then moved up to the Max (also selective yellow fogs) and they're even more powerful, but the beam pattern is tighter. So, properly aimed, they're actually more useful on the street.

 

I also had the white Max fogs and loved them. If anyone wants mine since I sold the 4R, PM me.

 

Ya, not diggin on yellow or amber. Getting older I have a harder time with depth perception with anything but white.

I knew the DD were popular, primarily as a nice upgrade at a reasonable price point.

 

You really don't want to run a fog beam at the same time as your high beams. A fog is designed to illuminate immediately in front of and out to the sides of your vehicle in poor weather so that you can locate the road at low speeds. (You can actually "over drive" a fog beam quite easily.)

Your high beams are designed to illuminate well out in front of your vehicle for higher speed driving. When you use both at the same time, it confuses your eyes. Your pupils will try to constrict to limit the amount of light because there is simply too much there. This by default limits your distance vision. This is one of the reasons your factory fogs shut off when you trip the high beams on.

 

Diode Dynamics SS3 Sport fog lights that came with yellow and clear lenses (which I used) added 2 years ago, and they are great. No issues at all, and the installation was a breeze.

 

Does that plastic splash guard over the back of the OEM passenger side fog fit over the top of the SS3’s? Or do you not re-install the splash guard?

 

I was thinking of off-roading only- having the option to turn on the fogs separately would be nice since the light is just so great. But I’ve got a light bar for that.

 

I did reuse it. It fit fine on my 4R.

 

I never replaced it. Way too much trouble. Never an issue.

 

I put mine back on, zero issues.

Also, DD should be able to clear things up pretty quick on the plug and play status for those that have factory LED fogs. I just had regular ones, so mine was plug and play.

Yep.

 

Replaced the OEM LED fogs with DD Max in selective yellow on my rig. This was after going through Rigid in white and amber, BD with and without the cutoff shield, and finally landing on DD Pros in my wife’s rig. Will probably replace with Max’s at some point
