I decided to replace the factory steel skid plate with a lighter and easier to remove aluminum plate.

The TRD model seemed ridiculously expensive at around $350 after shipping and taxes, so I took a chance on one of the dozens of Chinese knock-offs on Ebay and Amazon for half the price.

They virtually all look the same and appear to be sourced from the same factory.

Got mine in yesterday and installed it today. It is an awful piece of metal that has the worst machining I have ever seen. It weighs more than the OEM steel plate and the bolt holes are off just enough to make installing it an exercise in remembering all the colorful phrases that I learned in the Navy.

Going on a 600 mile road trip tomorrow so leaving it on for now. Will be returning it and getting something quality next paycheck.

Thanks for the report. I saw them on EBay, I’m so glad I didn’t get those…

I’m saving for a full set of aluminum skids from CBI

Looks like a drill, hacksaw and a broken dremel created those vent openings. Woof.

Oh wow. Yeah the Car Trim Home set has the TRD logo.

How much did you pay for this? CTR is like $250

The CTH version I briefly owned did not look like that- which particular Chinese source was yours from?

At least the CTH skid has the removable access door for the oil filter.

I highly recommend RCI. My skid plate and sliders from them are top notch. And right now (all of November 2022) you can get 20% off with the code NOV22.

I have a factory Toyota one on my ORP and I like it. However, for $150, as long as it works, does it matter about the rough edges? If I was on a limited budget, I'd probably buy it. That being said, I am glad I have the one I have.

Why? Is that decent quality Aluminum or is it porous as a sponge?

Yuck! Thanks for the heads up!

I guess if you want real skids, you have to pay. Heck, even the actual TRD one is basically a showpiece.

Why wasting $ on cheap crap, just put it towards good quality product. Asking OP of this tread because I'm curious of what grade of Aluminum is used for that plate. Something like this is worth every $:

I think that's the general consensus. I just wasn't sure who you were asking, as you didn't quote a specific post.

I guess the old adage holds true we get what we pay for holds true here. I get it we all do our best

Although now we pay a lot more with inflation and hope we can get the part with a supply chain issue, then hope it does not get stolen and then we are happy.
