Question on buying a used 4.0

I found a used 1gr with low miles off a wrecked 2021 and they're asking 4k for it. Should I buy it for my 2023? I drive a lot (about 20k miles a year) and realistically think I can get about 350k to 400k (based on searching here and online I couldn't find anyone who had 500k on theirs) so would like a back up motor when the time comes. Should I do it or is that stupid?

 

4Runners are so numerous that you’ll always be able to find a motor when you want it.

 

If you have an extra $4K laying around, and can confirm that it is a good motor, that doesn't sound like a terrible deal. It might be worth checking around websites that sell used Japanese engines and see how the price compares.

 

If you can afford it and keep it properly preserved, what the heck. Worst case, you could resell and make a few bucks.

 

I think the worst case is you end up moving a couple of times before you need the motor and have to lug it around with you. This is the voice of experience talking.

 

If you live anywhere that vehicles are prone to rust, you will want a frame long before a motor.

At 20k/yr with a half million mile life expectancy, you are talking about storing that engine 20-25 years. It'll need a rebuild after sitting that long. I don't think it's a good idea.

 

Yes but this motor I'm eying has last than 7k miles and it's a 2021 so should be a perfect match

 

Good point I didn't think of that at all about the motor needing a rebuild from just sitting. Frame would be ok, I live inland socal and fluid film and woolwax

 

I think that you won't need a new motor for at least 15 years, maybe more. For that time it will be taking the space in your shop. And in 10 years you might not be able to afford gas price or your situation changes and you'll need pickup truck, or somebody run on stop sign and wreck your 4Runner or something else happens.

 

I'd put that money towards regular and proper maintenance. Doing that, you would probably never have a use for that replacement motor.

But if you plan to trash your vehicle and run it into the ground - the replacement motor may be a good idea...

 

FYI. Motors are electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic.

Sorry, had an instructor drill that into our heads for a couple years.

 

By the time your 4.0 goes, it'll probably be easier and cheaper to get one of many electric conversion kits that will probably be on the market in 2040 installed.

I really wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure there are better ways to invest $4,000.

Unwise purchase. Judging by your reaction to the first few responses you will buy the engine anyway.

 

You could always put it on casters and use it as a side table.

 

I’d pass on that engine.
Engine replacements in CA need to be same year or newer to pass smog and inspection in the future.
