I have an 40 amp breaker on a NEMA1 4-50 outlet. You use about 80% of the total power output, charging at 32amps. I can charge about 34 miles/hour overnight. I will charge from 15%-20% to about 60%-70%. That is good for about 3 days, at least.

Edit: it was $650 cad installed by a professional.

 

Congrats on the new ride! No need to justify your choice to anyone, you're the one making the payment.

 

Now if only the Texas electrical grid would support the current demand.

@kmeeg - i am still here training others and because I really love this forum, I will continue to make the parallel - i bet there are other like me here that feel the pinch at the pump and gave the EV a wild thought.

@DallasTRDPro - it is often called Canadistan. Everyone hates our prime-minister that somehow keeps getting re-elected. There are cars all over the highways and hundreds of yards with flags spelling "F#CK TRUDEAU". Mind you, more in the rural areas. We had protests that shut down the borders and the city of Ottawa (our prime-minster got covid symptoms all of a sudden and he was "isolating" exactly during the troubled times). He got ridiculed in the European parliament in public. A total shitshow. We had to wear masks on all flights till I think the 2nd week of October. Anyway, yes, it was nasty. We were among the worst in the world.

@Trail Runnah I am very well aware of that, as you can see, there is no hatred, anger or bad words. I thought it is a nice opportunity for others to read into it, wherever we like it or not, this will be the future, eventually.

@Beachguy We had a few issues here and there, but not like Texas. And we charge the car at night at home, we don't care about the daylight limitations.

Telsa is notorious to get someone to fix shit. Pray that you don’t need anything repaired you will be waiting a while. You can never get anyone on the phone. You will miss being able to take your car in for service and get it an hour after. My wife's Tesla has been a headache

I am at a point in my life where I cant worry about problems I don't have yet. I have insurance, maybe some patience, who cares, enjoy the NOW moment and call it a day. I will deal with tomorrow, tomorrow, so far today has been f#@cking fast !! This thing is a beast. Fast AF.
Another thing lots of peeps don't get is this: It's my day, I made it the point I can afford a Tesla Y (not the cheapest one) and I can actually enjoy it. Maybe you guys need a second shovel to move that cash, but here, this Model Y is currently $99720...100k on a vehicle, I must be insane LOL. They honored the lower price at the time of the order, but today, this is what i have in my garage, $100k cad vehicle.
Will it have issues? Sure ! Who doesnt ? My 4R always had the shimmy. I wrote that off. The buggy infotainment, cutting out every other week. The cabin noises in the cold when the 4x4 shifter would shake like a rabid bat. The stupid noise coming out of the left side of the dashboard and the whistle out of the top left corner of the windshield. And thats kinda all about it, otherwise the Runner has been a solid brick.
The 4Runner showed me I am not an offroader with my daily driver. Any ATV can do all that for the cheap. We go hunting up north, in the actual bush every year. We do bear hunts once in a while, still in the bush. We do crazy fishing trips for weeks at no end. I can get my off-the-grid fix with an ATV.
When a Canadian says up north, you guys need a map. We drive 1200 miles north (kinda the same Toronto to Miami) and you are still in Ontario, that's far north. So I took advantage of the insane resale value and got myself another toy, one I can enjoy for the rest for the year.
It is going to a learning curve, but boy, there will be a day when all of these good folks here will see a 4Runner all electric. Not soon, but still.

One thing: all these EVs will make amazing off-roaders, you can control each wheel individually at an amazing torque level - Rivian will kill left and right. Give it a year or so.

 

Good for you dude. Like others, I'm super interested to get updates on how life is with the Tesla. I totally get the appeal.

Myself, I'm getting a manual trans BRZ/GR86 in about a month. That will be my fix for old-school driving fun -- 6spd shift-fer-yourself, rear wheel drive, no computer controlled suspension, no active safety nannies like lane keeping or emergency braking when the computer thinks it's needed. Not even a turbo. Just a good old gasoline, mechanical sports car -- but with modern build quality and a warranty.

With that in my garage, I'd be even more interested in venturing into an EV as a replacement for the 4Runner. I'm hoping to hold out for the next gen of batteries and better charging network, and have a (naive?) fantasy that there'll be a good EV SUV option that isn't controllable via the Internet, but I totally get why one would make the choice you made now. Have fun with it and keep us posted please!

I don't see @canadian.bacon complaining about any criticism. He seems to be informing us of his decision to give up his 4R for an EV, and given the circumstances, I'd probably do the same thing, with the exception that I could never afford a Tesla

My reasons are very simple. I’m not a servant for Captain Planet or a Tesla fanboy. I am just fed up paying for gas. I don’t buy into the cult, being Tesla or Apple or whatever else is out there.
It’s fun. It’s fast. It’s cheap to operate. Supposed to be reliable.
As for all the ones out there saying it will fail, who knows ? So far I see all manufacturers putting billions into R&D. They gotta know something…

 

It's interesting how people automatically jump to conclusions about why some people get electric vehicles, and make it out to be some other reason. I bet everyone is tired of being held hostage by oil and gas, some people just want to have have their cake and eat it too. Spoiler alert, gas is not going to get cheaper in the future. My next vehicle will be a hybrid at the very least, maybe full electric if Toyota comes out with a range worthy elec T4R or Taco.

 

@Joekader LOL, I’m not gonna comment on that. If you want to go off-roading, start climbing rocks and jog on trails.

@TX4runner21 indeed they do. It seems lately they only fluctuate uptrend. Even though gas is just under $3 in Tampa and 3.50 in Ohio , the prices here just go up. I’m done waiting. And a few fillups at $8/gal will change your perspective pretty quick, much quicker than a 4Runner 0-60.
As for the tires, not like my Falkens are/were a statement in durability. They were already quite noisy at 30k miles and the performance was going downhill a bit.
Not every drive is going to be a race, sometimes I do enjoy my coffee on my way to work.
I already took that into account, I’m not an idiot and I’m not complaining about it. First world problems. My car is too powerful, I can’t afford the tires.
The battery warranty is 8 years or 160.000 miles. I can only hope I’m good and healthy and not pushing daisies by that time; then I’ll see what I can do about them batteries.

 

Good for you for trying something different, please keep us updated on your experiences if you would. I'd also venture to guess most people are scared of change. It's kinda similar to when fuel injection first came out, and everyone threw their hands up in the air immediately pointing out and complaining about slight hiccups and the new tech at the time. Look at us now, none of those jokers would go back to a carburetor, they enjoy the reliability and fuel savings too much. There's always gonna be a segment of the population with nothing but push back, just wait and see how many people buy when they have an all electric T4R that has good range and can tow

 

Note: I hope to keep this thread clean and on point. No political discussions, or arguing about why I did the change. That was answered: no more hostage to gas prices. Beyond that, its personal preferences and opinions. Life beyond the (gas) 4Runner - to follow soon.

Same reason we traded our 18 limited, at the time we had a 17 taco, and 18 runner and a 2011 Subaru Outback that was becoming the kids dd. I could not accept the fact that neither of the newer rides got 20 plus mpgs. Then we found the Rav4 prime, like I said before, we have gone months with putting gas in it, we have pumped about 150 gallons in almost 16k miles. And most of that gas was used on highway or long trips. However, I really wanted to make sure I had a ICE 4Runner until I see what yota does. And yes, we will also be going through some tires, 1 because my wife doesn’t like to slow down for corners, 2 because the car is so fun to race around corners, and 3 it’s so easy to chirp the tires, even when already moving.

 

I used to drive 100 miles a day or about $650 a month. I call BS on $1000 a month. I just bought a 2022 4Runner. #noRegrets

 

That's about $700/ month at current fuel prices in Wisconsin, assuming 17 MPG. Or, $1147 at $6.50/gallon. Fuel prices vary by region.

That topic was explained in the thread. We won’t go back to that. Between towing a small trailer, fluctuating gas prices, traffic, going camping every weekend, some of the days were pretty bad. All behind me now

 

After 3 days without the 4Runner and driving the Tesla:
- I keep trying to rest my hand on the shifter
- I keep looking for the start button
- I keep checking the gas prices at the local stations
- turning radius is a totally different animal, so I ran the numbers: 37’ Runner, 19’ Y
- it will take a while to get used to no engine noise. No transmission gears. Awkward silence on the road
- we don’t know the extent of the range anxiety at this moment. Soon to come, I’m sure.
- the headlights are out of this world compared to the 4R
- missing the ride height. But the Y is very planted, stable, no shimmy (kinda miss that shake in my hand), no steering wheel play at all.
- the Y is fast. Like dude. Fast. It will be a long time to adjust.
- no nose dive
- I have touched the brakes 3 times in ~100 miles. No highway really yet
- the infotainment cannot be compared. Different beast altogether. So far, don’t miss apple CarPlay, the Y has satellite view google maps.
- love the 2 wireless charging pads - no more cables !!! And the angle is good enough to have waze running and still be able to see it.
- the minimalist design takes a while to get used to. Lots to learn.
- the 4R is wider inside - rear end, looking at sleeping surface. Will measure later on today. Also, not as tall inside, but the glass roof is pretty cool. I think that will get awfully hot in the summer
- lots and lots of storage. Holy moly storage
- glad to be away from the 4R console , that was a big pet peeve of mine. Love the new design and storage cubbies
- have i mentioned how fast this is ?

The funny thing is if you follow your electric rates they have risen faster then the price of gas over the last 10 years

So you think a $10 fill up is expensive, and you'd rather pay 70+ for the T4R? Also you could trade in your 4R and it'd be half the cost. Then you have the cost savings on fuel..... hmmmm

 

I was trying to explain to the person I responded to how easily gas could be over $1,000 a month, depending on your local fuel cost and how much you drive.

When I said "Why are people arguing about this?", I meant that I don't understand how anyone couldn't believe that you were paying $1,000 a month for fuel.
