Hey all! i am looking to buy some rails for my 2017 off road and I came across these:

NFab Rock Rail Part# T104RKR4R with steps I can remove.

then i saw a comment that because they aren't attached to the frame they aren't a true rail.

    then there are these:

N-FAB Wheel To Wheel Nerf Steps (Black) - T1464R

I am not a hard core climber but if i put something on my runner i want it to protect the quarter panels as well as look good:)

opinions? anyone with experience with either?

    Thanks!!

Welcome to the site Rich, if you put anything with steps that hang they can catch and it will be ugly. If your looking for sliders you can get these (and other manufacutres too) that can have a top plate that you can stand on like a step. Then best of both worlds with sliders for protection and something to stand on:

if you're looking for steps only then the N-Fab one are ones I'm looking at myself.

Yeah, if you THINK you might go offroad with it, ditch the running board idea and get genuine rock sliders that are welded or bolted to the frame. You hit a rock with running boards, and you could do more damage to your rig than just withOUT the step at all.

    Check out:

There's a section on rock sliders with a bunch of pics.

All-pro also makes some nice sliders: When I got my 2017 SR5, there were 2 nearly identical rigs there. Same color, everything. Only difference is one hand running boards, and it was $800 more! Yeah.... No. Since you can easily get rock sliders that actually support the weight of the vehicle and provide protection for half that, I went without...

TRD black wheels, leveling kit, NFab nerf bars with steps, garage life at 9,000'.
I went with the NFab with built in steps, bolt on model as I needed the step and not so much the slider as I probably won't (hopefully won't) do that technical if off roading. I like the look and function. I really like them so far. My son put them on in about 30 minutes.
