Agreed! I got one of each, although my youngest has the FJ at college :/

I don’t know about that article. The author hit the mark with his descriptions of the 4Runner and FJ, but other parts of it had me raising an eyebrow. My daughter has a Subaru Forester that I’ve spent some time in. His description of it had me doubting he’d ever actually seen one.

really, the old foresters left a lot to desire, but I feel the new ones are more like the outback. We have an outback and if I put some good tires on it, I feel it would be a tank. That thing has always been great in the snow, handles well at speed on dirt and has storage as a station wagon. Now, yes my 4runner and taco give me more comfort when heading to the woods, but I didn't think twice about having my son drive the outback to meet us at camp.

Don’t get me wrong. I love and respect the Subaru. But it doesn’t belong in the “unstoppable off-roader category. I’ve driven both on the same trail only hours apart, and the 4Runner easily passed over areas that stopped the Forester.

Editing to add: I think there are a lot of well thought-out and ingenious touches on the Forester. And I think Subaru’s sales, service, and technical people are better trained and more caring than Toyota’s. I wish Subaru offered a vehicle with real 4WD and low range.

Once had a late 80s Subaru true 4x4 with low range that off roaded like a little goat. Day one off the showroom floor took my soon to be wife 4wheeling into Clarks Fork Canyon (in WY) and ended up accidentally in the middle of a Billings MT annual Jeep jamboree. Did we get some looks.
