I decided to make a custom storage compartment cover that could accommodate some storage itself. So here is what I built

I started with a MOLLE panel roughly the size of the opening. The closest I could find for a reasonable price was this Greyman Tactical 21.25x17RMP. It is about a half in short or being perfect, and I didn't need 17" tall (tallest part is about 8"), but I figured I could use the cutoff from the larger panel for another project, and it only ran $54.99.

I made a cardboard template and used it to cut out the section of panel I needed.

I used some offset clips used for framing for hook supports on the bottom. Make sure you place the middle support far enough left to fit inside the recess in your storage compartment.

Engineering a way to hold the top in place was a bit challenging. First thought was to use a small keyed lock cylinder like for a lock box, but dimensionally it wouldn't fit right and there was nothing to catch on the top, so I used these Velcro tether straps.

I wrapped a strip around the upper frame of the panel through existing slots, and cut off the remainder. This I screwed into the top of the storage compartment. I used plastic screw covers on all the exposed screws for a more professional look. I finished it off with Greyman's RMP pull and carry handle, and some mounting accessories they had. It's working well for my med and fire extinguisher, but I am yet to figure out what to put on the front. Had hoped to be able to mount the axe or a flashlight but the space it pretty tight there. Regardless, I am happy how it turned out And gives me some unobtrusive vertical storage space.
