Hi all- does anyone know how to reset the system the way the dealership would have above?

I'm dealing with the same situation; brand new, adjusted a few setting including beep volume, fobs no longer work at a distance but still connecting to vehicle for proximity and start.

I had to track this vehicle down from a dealer outside of town and don't really have time for an unplanned roadtrip! Thanks!

I used the reset back to default setting once. But I wasn't having any issues then. It was just out of curiosity.
Have the engine running in Park. Go through the setting menu.
    Cheers

Unfortunately resetting to stock doesn't fix it. I just ran mine through the dealer. Took 10 minutes. On techstream it showed fob wireless off. He reset that it works perfectly. Didn't even have to repair the phone or anything.

Hi all. Running into the same where buttons don't work to lock/unlock via touch still works and starts the car.

Sounds like the dealer visit is the only fix? I've reset the head unit to no avail. Cheers.

I haven't actioned this yet, I'll probably just have the dealership look at it at next service

I am having the exact same issue. I just bought a 2022 TRD ORP. I was changing the door lock volume settings. Suddenly both fobs stopped working. Auto unlock proximity works when I grab the handle, but the doors do not unlock immediately like they did when I bought it. I have an appointment this weekend. Yeah, feels like a software bug.

Definitely a Bug. Does this affect only 2022s T4Rs... or previous years too?

Lulu - I traded up last week but my previous 4Runner was a 2021 SR5 Premium. I made several changes to the door lock settings including changing the door lock volume, many times and the issue did not occur on my 2021.

After some research today, I have discovered Tech Stream. I'm reading that Toyota Technicians use Tech Stream software to change codes, clear codes, enable and disable options, as well as reset the remote fobs, amongst may other awesome things. Looks like I'll need a compatible ODB cable that contains the latest firmware and a functional / compatible version of Tech Stream. I'm no stranger to reprogramming vehicles It should be fun.

However, I think I'll have the dealership resolve it and I'll post an update here. It would be better to explain the steps taken that I believe caused the issue. This way, the tech can capture any related error codes and logs then report the issue to Toyota. Not sure how Toyota handles software bugs, but if its like any other system, debug logs are generated, captured and analyzed. Then QA and Firmware teams root cause and submit a fix. It sounds like others have reported this to Toyota, so maybe they know about it and will release a software update soon.

Appointment is set for this Saturday 24th.

I was able to reschedule my service appointment for today. Toyota Techs restored functionality on both key fobs this morning. Attached is a photo of the description and cause from Toyota. Basically the tech found that the "wireless function was turned off in vehicle customization" The service rep. that I worked with told me that the tech used Tech Stream to re-enable the wireless function. The service rep also said that the tech stream software is the only method to enable and disable this function. The technician does not know how it changed.

I'm assuming that the Tech Stream software contains a scan tool that scans and verifies factory settings. If any factory default settings are different, it reports an error associated with a specific feature or function.

I'm also assuming that the wireless function associated with the Key Fob is incorrectly set to "read/write", instead of "read only" or it is set to "read only" and changing the door lock settings somehow triggered a change that enables read/write to the fob and disables the fob's wireless function. I can't verify either assumption though.

Regardless, both fobs are working and I'm not touching the door lock volume settings.

@antimadder - So this is a bandage fix. Its gonna to happen again.
Does the tech know if Toyota is pushing a permanent software patch out to all 2022 T4Rs remotely?

or we all have to waste valuable time seating in the service areas when it does happen eventually.

    Thanks

    LuLu, Yes.

I did the best that I could to express to the service rep that this appears to be a software bug that can disable system security, in this case lock / unlock and panic fob functionality. It should be treated as high priority. They won't let us talk to the technicians face to face here in Oregon. Personally, I'm looking for a way to submit a software bug report to Toyota. Or possibly email Toyota corporate somehow. I'm a software and network engineer by profession. Issues like this drive me crazy, knowing that I found a bug that others have also encountered and I can't fix it or submit a bug report. I'm now concerned about what other bugs may be lurking.

Did the tech say the problem could happen again if the lock volume is adjusted in the future?

Unfortunately no. He did not. I'm pretty sure all the tech did was re-enable the wireless function of the Fobs. I've never had to deal with an vehicle issue like this before. My communication at Toyota service stops with the service rep. Its a bit frustrating. Also, I can't find any way to submit a software or hardware issue to Toyota, though this is not surprising. Toyota does not want millions of customer uploading reports. How does Toyota determine that an hardware or software issue is wide spread? I would think depending on how many customers report it or if it was found during testing after customer release.

I'm going to try to reproduce the problem today on my lunch break and see if I can break it again.

    ## Update ## , I can't reproduce the failure. Verified that I could lock and unlock with the fob. Pressed the start button twice, without starting the engine and changed the door lock volume settings. Pressed the start button to shut off, tried the fobs and both work. Tried to reproduce the issue again, this time I changed the settings with the engine running. Shut off the engine, tried the fobs and they both work.

However, the door lock volume was set to 4, but its completely silent now. It does not matter what level the volume is set to, there is no door lock sound at any volume setting. I could not find an option to mute or or unmute. Not sure what's going on now.

I just had the same experience at the dealership as above - dealer used Techstream to see that the wireless funtion was turned off, and after they turned it back on the FOB buttons worked.

We'll see if I can't break it again via changing the lock/unlock settings again! (they didn't update the car in any way they say)

By the way, mine is a 2021... so it can happen to that year..

Anyone use the Carista obdii dongle to see what settings changes are available on 2021+ models?

Wondering if one can fix this issue themselves with Carista functionality.

    They'll fix it.

Man, what a dumb software bug. Come on, Toyota! If this shit happens out of warranty, and they give me shit, I'll flip my lid. :)

Same problem on a 2023 Pro - tried to change the settings and both FOB's stopped working for lock/unlock. Actually printed some info from this thread and took it to the dealer - of course they had not heard of this before. After 90 minutes they fixed the issue - which was the wireless was turned off.

My sound is now silent as well - and I'm afraid to customize it because I don't want to have to take it in again. Has anyone been able to customize settings after the dealer reset and not have the problem repeat?

I changed mine several times after the reset in front of the senior tech and it didn't break again.

Possibly they also updated the firmware beside just turning wireless on.

I asked if there was an update, they said it's the same programming for over a year. I'm not sure, but they said it's not been changed

This thread is important in my final decision to buy or not to buy the 2023 ORP I’m considering.

If anyone can post if a solution is in the works please do. If Toyota is doing nothing then I will hold off and continue driving my aging Tundra…

I don't believe the firmware is pushed to everyone except you take it to the dealership for Fob Issues.
So long as you don't change that specific settings.
Personally i wouldn't even change that settings.

Toyota don't send 'over the air' software updates except for the media players.. Right?

Hello Everyone, Hope you all are doing well.

This is my first post. I wanted to let everyone be aware that it seems to still be a thing. I just recently purchased a 2023 40th Anniversary 4runner and I experienced this exact issue on my second day of ownership. Just like some of you said, I was playing around with these lock settings and noticed this issue immediately after. I have yet to take it to the dealer but I will within the next couple of weeks.

    Best regards

23' ORP here, same issue and still no fix, the service shop here in Pensacola FL, reset stuff, checked plugs, it's clearly a software issue but they are blaming it on me working on a military base and with aircraft flying and all the frequencys messing it up. Toyota please find a fix
