I got out the multi media manual and looked this up. I have 3 JPG images, each less that 5MB copied to a thumb drive. I can plug the drive into my computer and view them. I plugged the thumb drive into the USB port below the radio, go to settings, general and change images and no images show up. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

I had the same issue, gave up after at least 5 attempts.

Make sure you hit the Transfer button to actually move them from the thumb drive to the HU.

And the thumbdrive needs to be empty of any other files. I scrubbed mine with my malware/virus software while plugged into my D Drive. It may have an issue with having three pics on the drive at the same time. My JKU was that way. One pic at a time worked.

Can't Transfer an image that isn't there. The images never show up.

All the above and it usually takes a few tries to get the image to "take".

The image is only visible at startup or if you make it an "off" image, only visible of you turn the display off, so honestly it's not very useable anyway.

Well, I think I'm going to give it up. I wanted to post a picture from a vacation we took to surprise my wife. It just will not work. I'm getting very disillusioned with Toyota. They took the message app away, which I used all the time. When I contacted Toyota to complain, they all said it wasn't their department. Now this feature that the manual says I have doesn't work. I thought I was getting a very good truck, but now I'm not so sure. I don't think I would buy another one.

The 4Runner is very fussy about how the flash drive is formatted. In the manual it says FAT16/32. I formatted mine to FAT32 using an Apple laptop but the car wouldn’t read it. Then I reformatted it using a web bases online formatter to FAT16. Then it worked.

I can’t even remember the last time I used the radio. Best thing I learned was how to turn the display off. That really helps with night driving.

The drive was already formatted to FAT32. FAT16 is not an option with Windows 11 for some reason.

My manual doesn't sat anything about the preferred format. The drive came formatted in FAT32. Windows 11 doesn't have FAT16 as an option. I re-formatted it to NTFS and then exFAT, and back to FAT32. Couldn't find a formatter in the Windows store that says anything about formatting to FAT16. I read the instruction in the manual several times to make sure I hadn't left out a step. It's very frustrating to be told that you have an option and then find out that it doesn't work. Also, you can't Save as.... that option does not exist. All I can do is send the photos to the flash drive, and then cut and paste into the StartupImage folder. That may be where the failure is happening. I hate to have to go pay the dealer to do this when it should be simple. I got a response that it needs to be a 4GB drive to work. Somewhere else I saw that it has to be at least a 16GB drive to work? I'll try resizing the drive.

I reformatted my thumbdrive, created two folders named as described above, added 1 pic each (less than 1mb each), plugged into the USB in the rig, followed directions, saw a preview of each pic, finished, but they do not show off or on startup. Weird ass shit.

You have to set them as the startup or off image in the settings menu also...

In that case, I would say you bought it for the wrong reasons. I looked up the 12 cars with the best infotainment systems, and Toyota isn't on the list. You did get a very good truck. You didn't get a very good infotainment system. Personally, I didn't even care about that when I bought my 2019.

I did, different pic for each one. I can see the preview of each pic as I set it to each each category, but after backing out, nada. I only tried once, I'll try again.

Sorry in advance if this was asked already but what are the options with the 20-22 infotainment system? Dont see any option to customize at all except color. Boo.

I didn't buy it for the entertainment system. But when you pay this much for a vehicle and then they take features away and others don't work as described, it makes me wonder what else is going to be messed up.

While it seems the customizable startup and shutoff screen capabilities have disappeared from newer models, on the plus side you can play videos from a flash drive. :-D

What video format is supported? I was trying to play AVI-file and I'm getting "No Video" message on the screen :(

I can’t remember off hand but it’s in in the manual. I also remember there was something about how the file is nested in folders.

I’m remembering now. On page 163-4 of the radio/nav manual the video specs are specified. I resized the video to fit within the max screen size and saved it in all three formats. I seem to also remember that a MP3 file had to be in the same folder as the video file or else the head unit wouldn’t see it. Sorry I can’t be more definite. I was going through a lot of trial and error to get it to work and I can’t remember exactly which permutation was successful.
