    Greetings,

First time posting. I'm dabbling in the market for a 4runner. I'm on the fence between a new 2023 4Runner ORP or Used.

    1. 2020 4Runner ORP with KDSS/Moonroof with 43k miles for $39k. Gray (Second choice color) - extremely clean, owner states no "off-roading" history with vehicle and miles are mostly all highway.
    2. 2016 SR5 Prem with only 26k Miles for $33.5k Gray - extremely clean
    3. New 2023 4Runner ORP for $48.8k - No KDSS, Premium Wheels. White (preferred color).

Intended use? Not a daily driver. Primarily will be used for long trips (once every two months? 700 mile roundtrips). Otherwise, will be primarily used for camping, light off-roading, mostly in Utah, Nevada, Colorado.

(Cringe point - I do intend on buying the 6th generation at least one year after the first round of 6th gen).

The 2020 is my primary choice but I would have to travel a good 500 miles to pick up. As mentioned above, I do intend on getting the 6th Gen. However, I may gift this purchase to my son if we start haggling over who gets to use the 4runner on the weekend.

Any thoughts, comments, feedback would be appreciated.

    Welcome.

My.02 would be if you plan on giving it up before you even but it, why fork out the cash now? And if you plan on just modding and taking everything off. The SR5P is a great deal if those are OTD prices. Again only opinion.

If you just want to leave it with few asthetic mods, 2020 then.

My vote for option 3 expect for the white color. My SR5 was white and didn't had any issues but feel like paint was on the thinner side when I scratch it. But if you search on line you might find some concerning Toyota white paint issues. Again I had multiple White Toyotas (Rav4, Venza, 4Runner) but did not experience paint peeling issues.

Since you plan on getting a new one in a few years, I would get the 2016.

I'm a big fan on SR5s with 3rd row seat. I know many hate 3rd row. I love non moonroof models for extra headroom (but no heated seats with non moonroof models from what I checked).

I have the 3rd row. Hate i lost the storage, but like the seats better for the dogs when the middle row is down.

If you offered the 2020 or 2023 I’d say go new. For $8k more go new. Particularly if you think you will give to your son. Get it fluid filmed care for it and surprise him.

See what color he likes without him knowing. Trust me $8k incremental cost is nothing over your lifetime and your son will get teared up years from now thinking what a great Dad you were.

I see you’re new here so check out some posts on white paint also. Some have had some issues over the years with it even on new ones. Not ripping on anyone with white just want to advise you of the issues some posted on here.

PS. You’re a good Dad to offer that to your son, hopefully he is a good son to you. My Dad helped me out as best he could growing up and helped me buy my first car. He did not pay one hundred percent but he gave enough to where I could get the next step up. I appreciated it more because I worked hard and he helped me too. I am grateful still to have him around. Good luck with decision

Everyone's feedback is very helpful and much appreciated. Just an additional side note, option 1 and 2 are private party sales so no tax or other fees. Very welcoming forum. Thank you all! The feedback is truly helpful in deciding. The White paint issue too!
