These are a three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol branded on a tire's sidewall indicates the tire meets required performance criteria in snow testing to be considered severe snow service-rated.

 

Do they appear to be wearing evenly?

Mine were load range c as well. After 29,000 miles they still looked like new and had 80% of their original tread.

I know there's some debate about whether you should rotate tires side to side or not, but I have had very good luck doing so.

Yeah I’ve looked at each one and they all look pretty even. I used to run the KO’s (not KO2’s) on my Chevy crew cab and I don’t remember them being so loud. When I first put them on they were relatively quiet for an AT but it just seems the noise has gradually increased.

 

I would try a side to side rotation. And see if it helps. Also, how is the alignment?

 

Even though I don't run these on my 4Runner. I have been consistently impressed with these Nexen Roadian MTX tires. They are relatively quiet for M/Ts and surprisingly enough I've found that they handle wet and wintry conditions much better than I would have expected of this type of tire. Time will tell on how fast they wear down, though. That's the next big test for them.

 

Just put a set of Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus on my 2019 ORP. 265 70 17, 115 T SL. This is my daily driver and will be used to pull my bass boat.




I was looking for something a little more aggressive than the Dunlop Grandtrek's that were on it when I purchased the 4R. I don't off road but there will be times that it is out in a field. Also, don't have a lift and don't plan on getting one, although I will be adding the Cornfed 1" spacers to the front to level it out a bit more. I mainly focused on tread wear rating and road noise as I didn't want to hear the tires singing to me all the time.

Initial observations: Was going from a 113 load rated tire to a 115 so I didn't expect a major difference in handling. I do feel that the Pirelli is a bit firmer in turning which is fine with me as I felt the Dunlop's rolled/flexed a little bit too much. Only have around 200+ miles on them 60% city/40% highway and they are as quiet as the Dunlop's they replaced. Only 1 rain shower so far but at 70 MPH on the interstate I noticed no hydroplaning, etc. Overall smooth ride even when I hit the bad patches on the interstate.

Based on what I've experienced so far I am happy with my purchase. As I get more miles on them I'll come back and update this post.

EDIT: I've had the tires on for 2 months now and I'm liking them even more. Today was the first day that we've had a heavy enough rain (while I was driving) to really see how the wet pavement ride was. Went through some fairly deep areas on the interstate and at 70 MPH it went straight through and I noticed no hydroplaning, etc. Still riding quietly.

EDIT #2: I've now had the tires for approximately 8 months. We had enough snow that I feel I've got an idea of how they handled it. No problems in the snow. Of course when the roads were icy there was some slippage if I got on the gas a little too much or hit the brakes a little too hard, but taking a little care in using the gas and brake pedal they did fine. I'm sure I've worn some of the tread off but just looking at the tires they are not showing any noticeable wear. Still a very quiet tire with good manners on the road. Only off-road stuff has been going across grass fields to get to deer stands. No problems at all in that area. As of today these tires are definitely a BUY AGAIN purchase.

 

Anyone got a runner with 3in lift 285/70/17??? Didn’t expect them to run but they do…

 

I'm guessing you mean "rub".

Lift doesn't matter once you flex the suspension.

I have 2.5" and 295/70/17. They never rub, except when I really bottom out hard.

Have you had an alignment since the lift? If not, get an alignment, and request the most caster possible while keeping everything else in spec.

Did you get aftermarket UCA's?

Edit: my 285's never rub, ever since the front mudflaps went away.

 

I haven't really been in clay mud. We have a lot of sandy mud here, and they've been fine for that.

I did recover someone who had gotten stuck in a grassy/muddy trail shortly after I got them, and they flung mud and got me through it very nicely!

I'm curious, when you run 295's, where do you keep the spare (assuming you carry a full size spare)? I haven't noticed a rear mounted spare tire carrier in any of your pictures. I've been going back and forth about just using the undermount for 285's when I go up to that size but really like the idea of it on the back to go to 5 tire rotations. Not sure it's worth the cost of the carrier and camera relocation. I'm pretty sure the 285 G003 will fit in the undermount location, even with KDSS, especially if I get the treaty oak spacers (although not sure they would be needed with a 2/1 lift).

 

Yes 285s rub. Mine rubbed the body mount so they where chopped. With a 3" lift you got aftermarket uca? I take it your had it realigned? What were the specs?

 

I keep the 295 spare in the cargo area. I'm not sure if it would fit underneath, but my 285 spare does.



Getting the spare out from underneath isn't bad. I wouldn't worry about doing it a few times a year.

However, if you're going to hit muddy trails and/or dirt roads regularly, I'd recommend removing the spare occasionally and cleaning the underbody around it. And, clean the spare, itself. Mine got pretty nasty after a few off-road trips.

FWIW, I definitely don't think the Treaty Oak spacers will hurt, but; I'm at 1.5" rear without them, and no lean. I should probably look into it, though, in case I'm limiting my rear travel.

 

Thanks! Nice setup, reminds me of my '86 cherokee that had the spare back there. Have more family/cargo now but I think the undermount will be fine - haven't had to change to a spare in over 15 years and I have a tire repair kit and compressor so think I should be good

 

I've considered a roof mount. Without the spare, it's basically a queen bed back there. With the spare in there, it's so cramped by comparison.

I keep the 285 spare underneath. I think as long as you take it down and clean it off periodically, it will be fine.

 

I considered a roof mount as well since I have a gobi that would hold it. Would like to try to keep the weight lower if possible (although I just bought a soft case to throw up there for firewood). If the tire was on top there's no way I'd fit in the garage and probably more difficult to change vs the undermount. Think I'll hold off for now because whatever I decide in the future (hitch mount or coastal offroad aluminum low pro) I don't think the weight will be a deal breaker for the suspension. Ultimate goal is to upgrade to dobinsons with new tires during black Friday sale but want to know the final weight of the build so I get the right springs

 

Nice! Good call on Dobs. I know a couple of guys with Dobinsons on there 4Runners and Tacomas, and everybody seems very happy with them.

 

I've been researching since I bought it new in 2019. I think digressive shocks like bilsteins won't be a good fit for KDSS since they will be a bit stiffer. We don't have any high speed desert bombing here so I don't need cushy reservoirs like kings. I think the dobs IMS may be a good fit since they are progressive. I know nothing will eliminate the KDSS stiffness above 12mph (unless I get the dr kdss switch, just not there yet) but think they'd be a good pairing

 

Any troubles with the needle bearing failing since the lift was put on?

 

I love the Toyo Open Country RT Trail in 275/70R17. Finally a RT tire that leans more to a MT tire.

 

I've got the Toyo Open Country AT3 on my 4Runner, a 1999 job, and they've served me extremely well on ice, snow, dirt roads with heavy rain, and a steep hill on the dirt road with snow a couple, say about 4 inches, deep. I just grabbed 4HI at the bottom of the hill, and up we went, no trouble.

Just my xperience with them so far.
