I’m in line for a ‘23 TRD Pro and would like your opinions on whether I should get tube steps or not. If so, what do you like the best? No wrong answers. I’m just looking for your thoughts.

I don't like tube style steps as it does not give the sides any kind of protection from rock chips hitting the sides on dirt roads. I prefer running boards / sliders with top plate to act like some sort of cover.

With my doggo tube style steps will be useless. running boards / sliders with top plate works for my doggo and feel safer for Mrs and Kiddo as a step as well.

    From factory options (IMO) -

I would pass on them if you have the option. You can pick them up from someone selling theirs for half the price. Also, they're hollow, feather light and offer no protection when offroading. Their form isn't very functional. Save you money and get some after market sliders that come far enough to use as a step or the trail running boards.

Do you need offroad rocker protection or do you just want steps to get into the truck?

I don’t know that I need anything. I currently own a 2021 4R Limited with factory running boards. Since I’m moving to a Pro, I’m curious about whether I actually need them at all.

Unless you've grown accustomed to or need steps to get into the truck, I say just leave it naked.

I removed mine on the day I brought it back home.
    Sold them.
    Put functional rock sliders instead.

If you don't plan on going off road, just keep them if you like the look

If I had my choice, I’d have nothing. I dislike the look of traditional running boards. My 4R came with N-Fab tube steps. They look cool and the wife relies on them even with the lift removed.

I can’t justify the weight and expense of real sliders, even though I actually off road several times a month during flying season.

IMO, running boards and sliders really don’t protect against door dings. Looking down the side of the car, the doors protrude farther out from the steps.

If it was me, id pass on the OEM tubes, and then put some aftermarket sliders on. But, thats me.

To each their own. I dont like the look of the OEM boards at all, and would remove them, over having them myself. But, sliders, ..... I want. And for me, one of the reasons, was for door protection, and well as rocker panels. Ive already told a story here, on one of the other several "slider threads" , I had happen, that, if the sliders had been on, would have 99.9% saved my passenger door, that now has a nice little bash on it.(the damn thing, was like a week old FUuuuuuuuu) And, these 100% will take the blow from jerk offs in the parking lot.

And, I love bashing and thrashing on trails, and in/on the rocks. 35 mins of being in Moab, my most recent trip (W/sliders installed), I was teeter-tottering my pile on a stone. One of a half a dozen that trip. But, everyone is different, with needing/wanting different stuff from their rig. Nothing wrong with that.

I had the Predator Tube Steps on mine for 15 months. I didn't like them from day one, but it took me 15 months to finally take them off. I never needed them and it looks much better without them. They retail thru Toyota for $579. I am hoping to sell them for $350.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
We just took the trail boards off our 22 ORP, my wife thought it actually made it more difficult to get in with them and I agree(rare).

I saw a Lunar RockPro the other day with the steps, and for sure like my sliders look over the step. I would not get them thru the dealership even if you do want them. I took the money I saved by not getting anything from factory and put it towards my sliders.
