That’s awesome! It’s definitely a relief after pulling that distance!

Curious, how high did your temp spike, and were you traveling uphill at the speed you mentioned?

I’m really happy about being near the Diesel Sellerz HQ. Took my son there the other day to see the monster bus which they used for a salt flats recovery this year on Heavy D’s YT channel. I’ve been watching those guys from the very beginning about 8 years ago. Good fun!!

I agree that the company should do a better job labeling codes, but at least we have places like here to discuss it.

For my initial setup, I couldn’t find any literature about there being another (third) temp probe on the unit, so I assumed the other code was for the other probe. Also, when testing before the trip, the temperatures behaved properly for a small reservoir to a larger reservoir coolant loop. My TCT would spike and if the temperatures were sustained long enough the TPT would start to rise. It also took longer for my TPT temperature to cool down once it reached higher temperatures.

Mine is stock and the tires are aftermarket. I don’t know what the stock tire model is, but if they’re the Grandtrek 265/70R17 they are rated for 2535 lbs at 51 PSI.

If your towing something like wsu_runner, then a 4” drop is probably perfect.

Throughout the trip, temps were typically 190-210 even with ambient temps of 95+. Saw a few 220+ on hill climbs and kept an eye on it but nothing worrisome and never had to slow down.

The spike came in the middle of the day after being trapped behind a number of slow vehicles (that wouldn’t pull off) for probably an hour. Finally had a passing lane….and I started flogging it. I was around 200 when I started, and I began to ease up once I passed 220 and had lots of hill still to go. I think I had backed off to ~40ish mph by the time I hit the summit. Those last few minutes were 230-250 although I never actually hit 250 as I had already planned to stop if I reached that temp.

Agree with your other comment that suggested a 4” drop would have been the right fit for my situation had the Uhaul site been accurate and I had it to do over again.

Thanks for the response guys. I am always interested in towing analysis. I bought my 21 ORP last year and intended to get my boat this year. I about 3k lbs all in for a 18ft Crestliner aluminum boat.

Sadly due to health issues of both my folks this year I never got the opportunity to get my boat and tow it with the 4R. I got my new ball hitch in May and that was it. So I am hopeful that next year I can finally tow with it.

I figure if my old Explorer body on frame V6 could do it for years surely the 4R should be that much better. I will only be towing on flat land as well and my only incline is up a boat ramp.

So reading the tests you guys have put these 4Rs through towing is very encouraging.

I'd love to move to Utah, even if only for the biking. All the off-roading would be a bonus!

The secret is pretty much out on UT though, huh? Unfortunately I can't imagine being able to afford the cost of living.

I towed quite a bit with my 2nd gen Tacoma - same powertrain but longer wheelbase. The longer wheelbase matters (and I miss it for towing) but had no issues towing with the 4runner and a Uhaul that was about the same weight as your boat, plus two family campers with the Tacoma which were heavier. You should do well.

Cost of Living in Utah is not bad and it is off set by the lower cost of energy bills (I have Solar) and the cost of doing things like Fishing, Boating, Hiking, Camping and hitting the trails on the Bike are like near nothing just depending on where you decide to go.

Thanks again for sharing. Very interesting to see how variable the Torque converter temp is while driving. This pic from as soon as I parked after driving in traffic for 30min and how it cools down about a minute after in idle. Very nice to see.
(TCT is new Torque converter from yours and TFT is my old one and looks like its Transmission Fluid at the pan)

I just look at the cost of real estate as my barometer. It seems like anywhere that anybody would actually want to live is now stupid expensive. I have a lot of Utah stuff pop up in my news feed, and from what I gather Utah's experiencing something of a housing crisis, like a lot of other areas in the country. I'm not in a field that would enables me to be a very high wage earner, so I'm pretty much priced out of anywhere good, lol.

Agreed, my car insurance on two vehicles (the other is a regular compact car) dropped $1,400 per year. Home prices are steep, but rate hikes will hopefully cause prices to drop 5-6% by next year. That helps if you plan to buy with a substantial down payment (30%-40% down), which I realize is super hard to do without previous equity.

Yes Rate hikes will cause some metro areas to see price drop however Salt Lake City will retain a higher than average so if you go North west that is where the price drop is already taking place as for the West Valley area that is not for me it is too crowded. Another big factor thought is there are depending on what skill set you use for employment and past experience it is not hard to land high paying Jobs like where I work that will get you there faster.

Welp, as an apartment dweller I have no equity, and could probably manage 10% at best. So I guess I'm fawked.

10% is a good emergency fund/down payment if you did move and wait out for a drop. More economists are siding with Moody’s predictions. I’m currently renting 2 bedroom 1 bath for $1562/month (fees included in a complex). There are one bedrooms, but can be tough to come by online. Hang in there!

Sadly rents are up in many areas also with this crazy inflation. I have read in some more posh complexes by me rents increasing as much as 40 percent.

Nope you are not..... Just start yourself a want the House fund and contribute every payday to it and everyone can really do it however the hardest part is leaving that money alone don't rob it for that blasted "I want it now thing" if you have Direct Deposit put 20, or 30 away in separate account every pay period but don't stop there. Got stuff sitting around that is good but doing just that sitting around? Sell it! and put that money in the house fund jar.
I use to hit garage sales looking for stuff I know I can sell for more (use to? I still do) best thing there look for Items you know what they are really worth and you can get more for it than it will cost. anyways that fund can add up plus if you really get into it it will add up faster that is how I purchased my first house and even when my truck got paid off I still put that amount I was paying every month into my next truck fund.

That’s good advice Wdsteven! The key is not touching that money until its for the intended purpose. My Mom taught me that concept as young kid; everything had a fund. For many years that's how I did it too and think of how much less you need to borrow if you have cash saved up. Its even better to this now with rising interest rates s
