2016 XP wont lock with key fob

Hello folks! Im hoping to get some help with an issue that my wifes 2016 XP 4runner is having. it has started not locking with the key fob and there are a couple signs that make me think the vehicle is recognizing that the key is still in the ignition(i think). I have checked all the doors and hatch to ensure that they are closed properly, ive replaced the battery in the key and I have disconnected the battery for over 12 hours to try a system reset. the symptoms that come with this issue are......when you turn the vehicle off and remove the key, the backlight on the clock on the dash stays illuminated and the 12v power point for a phone charger etc. stays powered up when under normal working order it wouldnt have any power. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

 

You have a second remote? Does it work?

I'm going to guess bad remote. If you changed the battery.

This would be my guess also, unless the new battery is also bad. It happens.

 

Mine completely messed me up thats why I say remote.

First remote started working intermittently. Changed battery and didn't work at all after that. Grabbed second remote and it didn't work either. Replaced battery and still didn't work. So at this point I'm like something is wrong in the car. Went to trying to troubleshoot the antenna. No real luck and I found another battery. So go to put it into first remote nothing. Second remote and everything is good to go.

So ends up I had one bad remote, dead battery in second, POS battery brand new from store.

 

Ok so we finally found the second remote and same results. I would like to add that this problem happens intermittently. I feel like it’s maybe something with the ignition module. I say that because it seems as though the vehicle is detecting that the key is still in the ignition, hence it won’t lock the doors by any other way then from outside with the key. Thoughts?

I'm having the same issue with my 2019 ORP.

I went camping and trail riding this weekend. After the trails on Saturday, I could not lock the doors with the key fob. If I tried to lock them with the button on the windowsill, they instantly unlock as if the key were still in the ignition. If I close the door and use the keyhole in the driver's door, It locks and unlocks like normal.

Anybody have this issue and figure out what it was?

Side note: It didn't work Saturday after the trails, but it worked on Sunday morning. Then, it didn't work Sunday afternoon after driving around all day. Then, it worked today after sitting all day, but wouldn't work after driving around a bit. So, it seems it could be related to heat. I'm pretty puzzled, at this point.

The plug for trailer wiring was packed with mud, so I thought that could have somehow been an issue. Issue. But, I cleaned it out thoroughly yesterday, and it's still acting up today.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Unfortunately your description of the symptoms sounds like the vehicle rather than the key fob.

 

I suppose that's a possibility. I've never had a Toyota ignition switch fail on me before. It definitely makes sense, though. This would definitely suck!
