Can you explain what "octane learning" means and how you achieve it?

There are ignition maps that can be adjusted. There are settings for low load, low rpm and high load, high rpm.
They will adjust based on knock values. The ECU will adjust the maps based on the KCLV and the knock f/b. You can monitor it with OBD fusion or any obd2 monitor. You will see how it changes with different octanes.

@PapaRee @TWTaco Updated the tune last night to KDMax-PRO+XT from KDMax-PRO and I have to say is nice gains everywhere! Only did a five mile cruse and was really paying attention to the responsiveness and how the transmission was behaving. If I had one gripe about the previous tune it was the trans sometimes not behaving as to what I would want but the XT really minimized if not wiped it out. I don't attribute it to the trans but what the engine is telling the trans. More on that as I drive it more. Overall very smooth power delivery and like the throttle tip in much better. Seems solid (quicker) anywhere in the rpms, stop, rolling start, 30, 40 50 mph.
    Impressed with you guys work!

Would having and intake and exhaust benefit? Or does it not really matter?

Not as much as you would think.
I feel like it lets it "breath easier", but not as much power gains as you would expect.
    Not worth the cost.
I would do the tune first, then decide. That is also what I tell guys that are contemplating gears. Try the tune first, then decide.

If you are happy driving your 4Runner on the stock tune, stay on the stock tune. But if you want smoother shifting, linear/aggressive throttle, and improved drivability, get our tune. You won’t be disappointed!
At the present, our customer reviews are positive and we are planning a Dyno test soon.

Only the 2020-2022 have shift maps in VFtuner. Mat/Vftuner would have to add the shift maps in the software for us to adjust them. But, with all the other changes that we are able to make, the shifting is smoother and improved.
As far as the extra power and torque-- we have been tuning the 3rd gen Tacoma for a while and have Dyno tested our work. We are aware of the changes needed to make power and torque. We have made these changes on the 4Runner and have gotten positive feedback and positive "butt Dyno" results. We will Dyno our tune to show data--Hp and torque numbers.
As with our Tacoma tunes, there is always a money back guarantee (minus registration credits) if you are not happy with the tune.

For the sake of knowledge because I am not trying to overstep, there are some Limited trim models for 2010-19 with transmission control, although still nothing on the level of what's available for the 2020+. All the same though, the number of 2010-19 ECU versions with shift tables available is extremely small.

There are other ways to influence shift behavior though, from the engine side.

I've only seen them on Limited trims for 2010-19, and not all of them either. Just two or three tops.

I have a 2022 4 Runner TRD Pro that I'm looking at getting a tune for. I have VFtune and the cable from OV (bought from OV for my 2017 Tacoma) but havent used it in ages. What would I need to do to get the ball rolling? I probably need to update my VF tune software first but it's been awhile since I've used this stuff. Thanks for any help I can get with this. If I can just get pointed in the right direction I will figure the rest out. I really didn't think the 2022 4Runners had a tune available yet so I'm pretty exicted to try this. Thanks!

    Troy,
You will need 10 credits to register your 2022 4Runner (Tacomas and older 4Runners are 4 credits) and you will need the tune file for your 4Runner (PM me or @TWTaco to purchase tune files).
The problem is that you have to have the Pro software to buy credits, so you cannot get them. If you are near one of our KDMax Tuning Group guys, you can pay them to register your 4Runner. Once it is registered, you can flash it with your Vftuner (once you update your software).

    PM me for help.

Is there such a thing as a tune for Magnuson supercharged vehicles or is there some other stuff we'd have to do to eek a little more power out? I'm really hopeful for a tune for the transmission as I'm pretty sure the stock blown tune leaves the trans pretty much stock.

The dynograph is simply a means of demonstrating what a tune can provide for these vehicles. KD's may make more power, with a different curve, I don't know. If it does, that's great. That is not my business, nor will I speculate on it for that reason.

I am happy to discuss the details surrounding the Panama dynograph in the YotaWerx Tuning thread. This is KDs thread and should not be taken off the rails discussing non-KD related material, and I am not interested in creating dissent regarding various tune options.

With help of @wahoobie I got the KDMAX Pro XT tune via remote tune the other day on my 2020.

Its been great I've put over 150 miles on it in highway and street since and its been great. The low end torque and pickup has been great, truck no longer hunts for gears on the highway and much more smooth. Going on a 3k mile road trip next week will report back on how it does and fuel economy (hoping it goes up).

Just tuned my 2020 4Runner with the KDMax-Pro+XT tune! I will give a more detailed review when I get to drive some more but I will say the throttle response is excellent and a huge improvement! Just pulling out of my driveway felt like I was driving someone else’s vehicle. The response on the low end is incredible, shifting is smoother and at more appropriate times. Drove a few small hills and instead of the previous sluggish response that required you to really get on the accelerator it more aggressively took the hills with a lighter foot on the accelerator. Like I said I have been in it about 20 minutes so I have more details to uncover, but my initial response is hell yes. Another detail I noticed was my MPG jumped up to 20mpg! I am going to top the tank off today and see where that settles. I am completely stock other than the tune and a prinsu rack. Getting a lift and tires next week. Headed out to Oak Mtn today so I look forward to some more drive time. HIGHLY Recommend this tune! Call your local tuner ASAP!!!! I am in Birmingham, PM me if you are interested.

2021 4Runner 4WD - Tuned by Green Gorges in Cincinnati, OH
Just wanted to post some initial impressions. First off, highway driving is very much improved. No more gear hunting for the smallest of inclines. When it does downshift, it only goes to 4th, and steadily climbs until speed is reached.

I did notice an occassional gear hang after a downshift, where it would hold at RPM until I tapped the accelerator, then it would shift to 5th. When still accelerating, I do get some harder shifts into 5th gear.

On the way from Indy to Cincy, I averaged 18.1 mpg. On the way home, I averaged 19.4 (I reset it after the initial test drive). One thing I'm still adjusting to is the accelerator sensitivity - I find it harder to smoothly pull away from a stop. I can report back more once I get more driving time, but the highway performance and mid-range while cruising is much better.

Glad to hear your enjoying the Pro+XT on your 2021.
If you like we can adjust the throttle for you if needed.
After more time with it you may get use to it just know you have that option.

Just completed a 1475 mi round trip to CO with the tune and I can't say enough how much of an improvement it is. Loaded with awning, fridge camping gear, I filled up in Alamosa and drove all the way to Las Cruces (406mi) and the low fuel light did not come on. I have never seen 400 mi much less 350 mi ever. Highway average for the trip was 22.1mpg and I'm heavy with bumpers, skids, 285's and 4.56's. I'm completely blown away. @PapaRee @TWTaco great work on the +XT!

Working at our Hunting camp this weekend in Natchez Mississippi.
Took a break to tune a 2019 TRD Pro 4Runner with the KDMax-Pro+XT.
Customer was happy and noticed the improvements as soon as we started the test drive.
