What would you tell your younger self?

Hi all,

Just bought a 2020 SR5 Premium XP(attaching a pic) ! Honestly been doing nothing but looking into mods to do to it since I got it, mainly lights, roof rack, suspension.
But what would you go back and tell yourself before you started doing mods/not doing mods to help in the process?

4runner is already plenty capable in stock form. Keep it simple and function over form

 

Keep it stock and save your money. Other than stuff like tint, vehicle is pretty perfect. I agree 100% with @hossler1788

 

I would show myself a picture of my currently modded out 4Runner and then say, "The lift, rack, awning, tires, wheels, lights, etc., don't make getting to work better."

 

Curious to think if you did a suspension upgrade if that was worth it?

I have not. I will probably just keep it stock when it’s time to replace.

like mentioned above, what are you using the vehicle for?? I absolutely agree with the function over form idea. I don’t need more than stock and some tires for my use.

 

Do what you want to it, it's your car and you are the one who will enjoy it. While I agree with the others, that the 4R in stock form is very very capable, it can't do all the trails that a 4R with 2.3-3" of lift and 33's can do. And that car can't do some things that a 4R on 35's can do. If you are serious about off roading, 80% of it is skill, but that 20% is a very real factor when you simply need the ground clearance, bigger tires, lockers etc.

I haven't regretted anything I've done to mine (2.5" Icon lift, prinsu rack, BD linkable light bar, BD chase lights, BD ditch lights, molle panels, Icon wheels with 33's etc... I will continue to build it, maybe bumpers some day. Part of the fun for some of us is making our cars unique (#mods !) Enjoy your new 4R, it is very sharp looking!

 

Get the FJ Cruiser instead of the Jeep in 2009 and Fluid Film the crap out of it.

 

I would get sliders and call it a day, those steps are handy for the ladies or kids but they will get ripped off anyway.

 

Engineering school is far more important than pu$$y.

Yes, a lot complain about body roll, brake nose diving. A simple fix/upgrade, 5100 or eibach struts/shocks.

 

What would I tell my younger self:
If you don’t own it outright, pay off the loan before spending money on upgrades.

Looks like you already have all terrain tires. Those are what I would consider the only really necessary acquisition.

Be scrupulous about the maintenance.

Yes. The Predator steps aren’t even particularly practical as steps.

 

I'd tell my younger self to buy Apple stock. That dumb iMac was a smokescreen for the true innovation that was coming later.

Back on the topic - two+ decades ago I bought a pre-Tacoma Toyota pickup new. Couldn't afford any upgrades (frankly, couldn't afford the payment either) so I wheeled it, stock, all over the place. To this day I'm still impressed with how capable it was out-of-the-box, and the few times I got stuck or hung up on something made for great learning experiences and even better stories.

Save your money, go out and do what you want, and after that figure out if you need to spend money to shore up any 'weaknesses'.

I told myself to enjoy the stock version for a little while before embarking on the mod path. The issue is that I only enjoyed it for maybe a month and just went nuts with all the crap I have put on it. But you know what, I don't regret it. I have learned a ton of knowledge and made a ton of friends too on this platform. Yes, I have spent a ton of $$ too but who cares.
This could be your mid-life crisis vehicle. It certainly has become mine. Enjoy the ride.

 

Stock suspension is super comfortable!

AT tires look cool but many people end up chasing slight steering wheel vibrations with AT’s. Not always, but often.

FYI that little divider in the center console is removable. I just realized this after multiple years of ownership.

The Carista app/obdii dongle is fun. You can customize a bunch of vehicle settings with it (windows, lights, seatbelt chimes, door locks, and more).

I guess I got a little off track here… but enjoy your new truck!!

Search and read here before spending large amounts of money. Especially the “what have you done to your” thread. And don’t be afraid to ask.

I've learned that research on mods is key. Drive it and learn what is right for you. new and flashy isn't always a good mod for your particular situation. Only you drive your truck and pay for it, no one else pays for your stuff.

 

Comparison is the death of joy.

 

I'd tell myself three things-
1. Don't become a teacher
2. Don't sell your '71 FJ40
3. Don't take over the family farm, dumbass.

 

Wow, I really appreciate all the input! I really do think at this point I’m just gonna do a 5100 install and maybe some LED bulbs and call it a a day. I know the steps aren’t practical but it came with the package so those will go away eventually. Thanks everyone, glad to be here

 

Main reason I signed up this forum, was to get mod ideas. First one to go on the list was tires. I asked the forum back then if the stock HT tires was good enough for the beach…I was expecting a lot of WTF do you think response but majority said it’s ok. Kept it stock since I bought it except for few minor interior mods. Stock runner was good enough to go to my favorite fishing spots. I guess it’s all up to you on how are you gonna use yours. Oh and welcome
