Just noticed the difference in both wheel wells on my 2022…wondering if this is normal or if they forgot a liner on my vehicle. Thanks y’all!

Don't know if they come like that, but my '22 is the same. Maybe someone can elaborate why they did this? lol

Most likely extra protection on the driver side due to the fuel filler neck being right behind that wheel well.

The pocket on the passenger side is there to catch sufficient quantities of mud to even out the drivers side lean. It’s on purpose.

Ya’ll worry about the weirdest stuff. Lol.

The front passenger may have something to do with the air box being located on that side.

My very first thought as well.

As for the OP, I'm going to guess it's an access door for the fuel tank filler port. Gotta be able to disconnect the fuel port from the body of the truck if you're dropping the tank.

I have a 2019 4Runner Limited. Has the same wheel well panel on the rear driver side. I have noticed a flapping noise for many months and could not figure it out until I had my wife drive and I sat in the back. After opening the Jack panel door I could hear the noise clearly. As it turns out, when in motion and especially on the interstate, this rear driver side wheel well panel has a little play in it causing it to flap against the well body making the noise. I just cleaned the area and there is no obvious way to tighten this up. My temporary fix will be to line the upper edge of the panel with some Exterior Silicone Sealant. Hopefully, that will stop the flapping noise on the 4Runner.

Side note, I HATE that stupid little mud/rock pocket right there. I've been considering 3D printing a filler piece or something to keep debris out of it. It always just fills with crap.

I did a Canadian redneck mud flap delete, literally cut the factory flap off with. Milwaukee Sawzall.
Then the true genius, filled that rear mudflap gap/hole with black expanding foam, never looked back

I'll have to listen for this drivers side noise tho

I wanted to see what mine looked like compared to OP’s, found this at forward end of drivers side rear wheel well. At first I thought ‘Holy Moly’ they covered up some kind of Japanese bug, passenger side has the same thing. Anyone know what this is?
