It’s not the high pitched beep I’m sure we all know, but there have been a few occasions where there was a quick, sort of deep “bong” sound (with a little reverb). It’s quick enough that I don’t catch any particular light turning on on the dashboard.

    Any idea what this is?

You talking the sound that's made when the hatch is ajar while in drive?

Not sure. I’ll have to try it tomorrow…is there hatch the same thing as the lift gate? Big door on back.

Correct, if the rear hatch is ever so slightly ajar (too much weight against the hatch, rope or something stuck in the hatch) a yellow warning ⚠️ will illuminate on the dash and a different beep will sound. I had a part of my tow strap stuck in it and whenever I hit a bump the alarm would sound for a split second.

On mine it's basically the same beep as the others, just a different cadence. Definitely not the deeper "Bong" sound.

I got rid of my loud rear end bang by removing the spacer lift. Never been happier.

Sorry, I drifted off the intent of your thread. I was referring to my rear shocks topping out.

Oddly enough, this might be a legit question. Is it “warning alert” bong sound, or a mechanical sound? If it’s mechanical, it could be the ABS system priming. After starting it, you can here the system prime or self-check, the first few feet of movement. It makes all sorts of weird sounds, some “bongy” in nature (depending on one’s preferred adjectives).

Oh it’s definitely a warning sound of some sort. Comes from a speaker someplace. It’ll do it after I’ve been driving a while. Sometimes when I’m starting to go, or coming to a stop, which has me thinking some kind of safety proximity alert that is too sensitive

So is it a bong? Or a quick paced beep-beep-beep? Not clear on what you are hearing.

What year and model is your 4runner? Does it have blind spot monitoring or cross-traffic alert (for backing up?

2021 4Runner nightshade (limited). No blind spot warning it cross traffic alert, but does have the brake assist pre collision warning stuff, lane departure warning etc.
It’s a single “Bonnnng” sound…sometimes very quick (“Bong vs Bonnng”)

Shifting into D while still rolling back from being in reverse, perhaps? There is a warning sound when that happens.

The only time my truck has a loud bong sound is when my buddy is taking massive rips in the back seat.

It's happened with and without iPhone connected. It's so sporadic, I hate to leave the PCS off in a traffic-heavy place like Austin Tx.

I don't think it's done it then . . . Last I remember I was coming to a stop, then starting again when it did it.

A quick bong vs a long booong sounds like a bing, maybe even a ding. ;)

Dont be afraid of turning off the PCS . Taking your own life into your own hands is invigorating. When I was a kid, we drove to school, uphill, in the snow, without PCS or ABS, BOTH WAYS! And we liked it!!!

Then again, Ive never driven in Austin to know if augmented driving is necessary to stay alive.

If you cant bring yourself to turn it off, maybe set up your phone camera focused on the dash until you catch it in the act.

HA!! Yes! I even had to drive with THREE pedals to navigate and a stick coming up from the floor! Somehow survivied it all...

It's a good point. . . I've never had any of this PCS stuff till now, so I like having it now that I do! I'll get it turned off and see if I can drive to a place where I remember it happening and try going thru the intersection with it off and on (with the phone cam on the dashboard--good idea there too.)

    Thanks for the laugh!

I was only in drive, but I'll see if I can produce that warning sound to see if it's the same.

Tell you what, those new fangled self-shifting auto-matic transmissions were the beginning of the end. Youts dees days dont know what it’s like to operate a machine anymore.

Along the same lines, last week when I had the spacer lift removed and got new tires, I was getting a “ding” sound every time I shifted from park to reverse. Then it mysteriously went away and I have been unable to duplicate it. My first thought was that maybe one of the ABS wheel sensors got messed up when they were doing the work. I carefully inspected under the truck but didn’t see any obvious damage.

Give them a tractor to drive, a rotary dial phone, and lock em outside to go entertain themselves and they'd lose their minds!
