Anyone own an Aussie Doodle? Looking into getting a puppy. But do not know much about the breed, and how trainable it is.

 

Both of those breeds a very intelligent, i have a Labradoodle and it only takes a couple of tries to pick up commands. Very high maintenance though, you have to keep them combed out so they don’t get matted up.

 

I'd avoid a doodle, personally. Breeder prices without the pedigree.

Aussies and Poodles are both good dogs, depending on what you're looking for.

 

The only thing a pedigree is good for is if your breeding & selling. Some of the best companion dogs are mixed breeds, i have been on both ends.

 

Absolutely. But doodle breeders almost never do as extensive health testing as preservation breeders do. There's nothing wrong with a mixed breed as long as you're not paying preservation breeder prices.

The puppies we are considering are Border/Aussie Doodles. They are asking $1000...shots/deworming all done.

I just can’t buy boutique dogs anymore when so many mutts are homeless. Rescues for us from here on out. But to each their own.

I hear ya in that. But the process to rescue is sometimes such a long drawn out event, and can cost just as much as purchasing from some breeders. Idk maybe it's like everything here in Oregon (crazy and chaotic) and not like that where others are from. Plus, most shelters won't allow you to see the animals in person right now. So it makes it super difficult to know personalities and such.

At any rate, some pup is going to get a great home here with us soon. And I can't wait to meet it!

 

yeah, all good points.

our rescues usually get shipped up from southern states (they need learn to neuter their pets, but that's for another thread). its always a bit of a risk.

we also used to foster and rehabilitate large aggressive dogs. that definitely helps making sure you get the correct adopters. i've seen so many get returned for a wide variety of reasons, mostly the fault of the adopter.

 

with over 38 years rescuing dogs and cats my wife and I have identified a few "special places" shelters that put the animals health AND happiness as their priority...No BS, endless forms, fake home visits (they liked my woodshop more than the acerage)...shelters that know us now and have even called when they took in a "problem child" they thought we could handle...That was JAX...we got him at 6 months after he had been kept in a crate 18-20 hours a day...he was taken from his litter when he was 4 weeks because he was "so cute"...it's been an interesting 2 years but he's truly a buddy now...
So I have mixed feelings about stricter enforcement of dog parent standards...some folks are not ready for the responsibility without training

I have 2 English Pointers that I use for hunting. They are mother (Stella) and daughter (Greta). Mother is 5 and Greta just turned 3. Both have been fixed.

 

What breed? Looks a lot like our Molly and we’re not 100% sure what she is, long story..
