    Hello everyone.
    My GFs trusty 1998 4 runner, 3.4 4WD.
Is throwing this code, P0046 and often with a strong odor of fuel
(not every time though, does it smell?)

What can you tell me about going about and testing the EVAP system .any trucks, helpful hints .

If it's more serious like the under tank valve...(hope not)..have any of you done this repair yourselves, or had it done by a shop?
    n
Any and all info is appreciated..

She needs a car to drive, and it won't pass at the smog shop due to the codes.

Many thanks in advance for any info

No such code. Do you mean P0446? "Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction"

Can be a few things. Usually it is a valve. You will get other codes for it being a simple leak or the gas cap.

You'll need to get it diagnosed with a bi-directional scan tool that can actuate the valves. Or you will need to actuate them yourself by jumping them and verifying they work and are not plugged. I haven't done this. I did replace nearly my entire evap system as a fix for a P0440 code. For about $700 in parts I replaced everything EVAP related except the valves in the engine bay. Should get another 20 years that way.

Take it to a shop for a smoke test. They'll tell you the problem. Hard to diagnose EVAP system without proper tools.
