Was reading a thread elsewhere talking about how Toyota has changed the OEM air filter to a thinner and assumedly less effective paper cartridge. Even the TRD Pro filter is thinner and each has changed part numbers confirming the change. I did some reading and took the chance on an AEM filter. No oil, washable vehicle lifetime warranty. Sounds great. I ahve ALWAYS been a K&N guy until my last JKU. Intake tube had that oil clinging to the entire inside, so i can only imagine what the upper intake looked like.

These are the same thickness as the TRD Pro filter (9PTR03-34140) but has an even wider and better seat than OEM. They advise to add a bit of oil to the edges that meet the airbox to further improve the seal.

Made in the USA, nice packaging and most important, that 14hp adder AEM sticker for your truck. Part # AEM 28-20438 DryFlow Air Filter (I have a 2017) And its only $44.99 currently.

I have the same one for my 22 pro. Love the dry AEM and it does sounds nice. The oil one, all it does is gunk your TB and intake manifold.

I bought this filter as well. It pays for it after only two air filter changes.

2 weeks after we bought our new 2016 T4R, I replaced the factory A/F with the Dry AEM. I wash it and let it air dry.
I've done this 9 times (9 oil changes) so far. Our truck is getting ready to turn over 100,000 miles.

AFE makes the TRD air filters. AFE are solid as well. AEM is in my wife’s 19 Honda Pilot.

I go 30K between cleanings. Just blow it out with light air. Installed my AFE at 30K, currently 117K.

Based on what everyone is saying in this thread I ordered one from the Jungle. Should be here tomorrow. Used to use K & N but I ended up fouling the TB's on a couple of my cars and went back to paper filters.

I've run AFE dry flow filters on all my vehicles for the past 10 years. I can't stand the oiled kind, I've had to de-gunk many a MAF sensor in the old days from over oiled K7N filters and once I discovered the dry flow washable filters I've been hooked.

Sound difference was mentioned a couple times. Can someone please explain the sound difference with this filter? Thanks!

I think people "believe" it makes more intake noise than it actually does.

Just installed my new filter. Haven't driven it yet so I can't speak to the "more intake noise" although I can't see where it would make that much difference.

At least on my Tacoma 4.0L single VVT there’s no change in sound with just a filter change. I did remove the charcoal filter also.

With the AEM, they advise not to remove the charcoal section, but as long as there is no sensor there, I dont see the issue in doing it.

The charcoal filter only purpose is to stop any fumes coming out of the intake when the engine is shut off.

You can hear the sound of the intake sucking, it's not loud by any means, but it's noticeable. Especially going uphill with the windows down when I never heard it before.

Looks just like the K&N filter i ditched after 200 miles.
I know the kn filter, does in fact flow more than oem, even if the "thinner this and that" is true, mention above. But, my off roading consists of a ton of sand, and fine dirt roads, even in the rocks. Id rather have the more protective filter, and change them more often than mentioned above (i mean, they are cheap, and easy as hell) than say "ive bought one filter, and used it for 300k miles" i guess. Like, a oil filter, .. i juat take it off and wash it, and put it back on ! Sounds odd to me. And of course, the newer, the more flow.
. But, again, my off roading may differ than others. Aka- actually go off road in the fine dirt and sand, and heat.

"You can hear the intake sucking" Take your intake tube off, and see if its the same. Or, basically wide open. The filter, SHOULD be filtering. Where im from anyway. But again, to each their own. Ill hang with a good oem type here, until i turbo or super charge my junk and or, dont go in the fine dirt/sand as often, all of which, will never happen lol.
But again, everyones rig, and use, is different. I just prefer the more protection.

Is this awkward??? Or am i just high?

I like the idea of a washable filter, since I feel guilty not swapping out for a new filter after a long dusty run. I had a K&N filter on a motorcycle for over 20 years, probably 40k miles. I never liked how I could see daylight pin-pricks through the element, but didnt care enough to get rid of it. I just never cleaned it and after a while, I couldnt see daylight through it lol.

Are these AEM filters like that? Can you see daylight through them like the K&Ns?

How does it compare to a normal OEM filter? I change mine every 6 months being in an arid and dusty place in Az with construction in every corner...

They are thicker than the current OEM papers, more like what the TRD Pro filters were. Def can not see through them at all. I like that the edges are thick rubber so it seals better around the circumference of the airbox. Just like other reusable filters. Its made in the US and less expensive than K&N, plus its a dry filter. Can be blown out with compressed air or washed with soap and water. I am in a very dry high desert too. The reason I got one. I can clean it after long dirty trips.

Here is a pic from what my snorkel collected in my JKU after driving through a 2 hour dust storm. This was in the bowl at the top of the snorkel. Speeds were down to 5mph in most places on the NM/TX border. Crazy drive. Often times you could not see the lines in the road. Worse than any snow storm Ive driven in. This is why I use snorkels and reusable filters in my offroad rigs:

the K&N air filters you cleaned the air filter not doing the correct K N filter ..
I washed the filter with water / cleaner then dried it total , then use the oil using the oil spray with a small amount ...
I also used the carb/TB with electronic MAF cleaner .... DO NOT USE ACETONE !!! CARB CLEANER NO ...

THE K N filter looks up on the sun then the light is correct .. then some light is dark then clean the filter and dry it then spray the oil on it ....

Nope, just long term money and convenience. Oh but if you add the sticker they include, 10hp if it's on the rear window.

I wanted to like this filter but I think it does not seal properly in the airbox. I ordered 3 times, and returned all 3 times. Thought it was maybe quality control issue or bad batch? The sides/edges fit fine into the bottom half of airbox, but when closing the 2 halves of the air box together, I do not feel any resistance for the top half of airbox before locking the 4 clips. In contrast, I feel a slight resistance with the OEM filter when closing the airbox halves. Also When I put the AEM and OEM side by side to compare, I can visually see the OEM foam edges are slightly thicker than the rubber edge of the aem dryflow. Anyone else have this issue?
