Hard shifting issue

My 2016 SR5 is having hard shifting when at 33-34 MPH. My wife drives it to work every day and has reported this issue. I haven’t experienced this yet but I also have a lead foot so that could be why. She says it feels like the kick you get when poorly shifting a manual transmission. Shifts in and out of gear. She has also reported excessive engine braking. Any ideas? The truck only has 6000 miles on it.

 

In that mph range under normal driving, at normal Rpm's what you are feeling is the torque converter lockup. It is normal. As you step on the gas you can feel the torque converter catch and then it continues in acceleration as normal.

 

the problem IMO is the tranny requires a PCM programing change. this is annoying when driving at those speeds in OD 5th gear. the vehicles computer puts this engine in a bad condition since at those speeds in 5th gear it causes those effects.

What I DO IS place in 4th gear problem solved .. I am not the only one that finds this annoying.

on my GM vehicles 38MPH is when it goes into the top gear not 30 MPH also with a V8 engine less hard shifting but since the speed is @38 mph you do not feel much .. the toyota however is .

the other issue I have is when stopped at a traffic light the idle speed will increase sometimes .. then unless I have my foot pushing down very hard the vehicle will creep forward ... so when I drive toyota I make sure that brake pedal is hard down just in case the idle ramps up.

I think its just the a/c compressor kicking in and out, mine does it in the summer with the a/c on or when its set to defrost. Not usually too bad but mine loves to do it just as im stopping in the garage, I think my 4runner wants to eat my lawn mower in front of it.

 

My 2005 Tacoma did the exact thing as I described above. The RPM change you are experiencing could be the air condition compressor cycling. Try noticing the RPM change when the AC/defrost is off, it should be gone.

 

Thanks for the responses! This is kind of what I figured the issue was. I personaly haven't experienced it as I pretty much stay at 35 mph when I'm in the 4Runner. I dealt with a very similar issue in my old Dodge Cummins. Torque converter lock/unlock at 45+mph.

My wife most likely had the defrost running. Hadn't thought the A/C compressor would have that much of an effect on the 4.0L. I will have to check this out later.

 

I had a Subaru Forester in College that would jump 150-200 rpm when the A/C would kick on. It got really annoying. I hope the 4Runner doesn't have this issue.
