Show me one company that uses it. I knew about this when it came out. It won’t go across country faster than a regular diesel powered truck. If it was practical companies would jump at this solution. I have not seen ONE.

edit: I can’t use a Tesla. I go up to 300 miles a day, then I have to turn around and do it at 0300 the next. No quick chargers where I live.

I'd probably need a few realistic specs to put under each option like torque and horsepower and MPG

I think your $55K is accurate, but I changed from cheap 4R to $48K hybrid.

Saying it louder won't change my mind.

I did say I would accept ZTEV. At least that's honest.

    I voted. :D

Give me more power, better fuel economy, and retain the ability to travel.

Regenerative braking is a great practical feature of EVs that can improve efficiency a good amount.

But the laws of physics are pretty rigid, and regen braking does not make a perpetual motion machine. The benefits of the feature definitely don’t make it worth caps-locking it lol.

You know how much regen braking will help on a long interstate drive, with one stop at the next recharge station?

There has got to be a way to incorporate a wheelbased recharging method which will charge by simply spinning the wheel. With magnets or something?

    or a solar panel top?

Yeah that's what I was thinking originally but then I saw that the 23 Sequoia was coming in at 62,000. I figured 55 for a hybrid 4Runner would be gnawing into there Sequoia people. I figured they'd try to undercut the Sequoia by a little better than $10,000

I actually saw something about experimenting with induction charging EVs like 15 years ago. Basically small coils incorporated into the roadway would charge the vehicle as it travels down the road. Would help extend electric vehicle travel by a lot, but obvious drawback is expensive infrastructure changes. Still, if it was just incorporated into major highways it would help with long range travel.

Just did a search and found this article:

I had an econobox car when I was a student and money was tight. I could live well with 28MPG and $1.00/gal gas. When I got my first 4R the 15MPG and higher gas prices were a big hit to my wallet but I factored it into my budget and it hasn’t been too big of a deal. Until recently when gas prices skyrocketed. Now with $6 gas it takes up a bigger portion of the budget and less money is spent on other items. I don’t see the price coming down very much anytime soon and it will probably continue to slowly creep up. I would welcome a 6th Gen hybrid, turbo and plug-in would be a bonus. Although I’ll wait for a model year or two until the new design bugs are worked out.

If I understand you correctly, recharging by spinning the wheels is regenerative braking.

In my layman’s understanding, electric motors and electric generators are the same thing. Basically, they are huge bunches of wires that can spin around magnets. This arrangement of wires and magnets can either create a current by turning it (generator), or it can be turned by passing a current through it (motor).

In an EV, anytime you press the brakes a little, the motors are immediately switched to “generator mode” by allowing the battery to take electrical charge from the spinning wheels/motor. Whenever a generator is providing electricity, the shaft becomes harder to turn (the more juice the generator makes, the harder it becomes to turn). So basically, the physical resistance created in the motor shaft when it’s used to charge the battery, is what is used to stop the car.

Of course, batteries cannot receive an unlimited amount of electricity when charging, or else things start to melt and go batteries go boom. That means the amount of braking the motors/generators can provide is limited by the amperage the battery can accept during a very short period of time. That’s why EV’s still need regular brake calipers and rotors to make sure you can stop as quickly as you need to.

That said, if you practice light braking, your brake pads will hardly ever need replacing, if ever, because they’ll never engage.

Regenerative braking only happens because electrical resistance whenever you “move” electricity. You can reduce electrical resistance, but like mechanical friction, you cannot eliminate it.
This is also why you cant connect a generator directly to an electric motor and expect any usable power, or even expect that they could keep each other turning.

If this is the same thing as wireless charging (I think it is), Im going to be the debbie downer and say this would be a technology that goes against the principal of efficiency.

Wireless charging suffers from a lot more loss than direct wiring, which means this form of recharging requires much more electricity than plugging in. I’m gonna call it wasteful on principal. Better to simply drop a rod into an electrified rail buried in a channel into the road. Like electric street cars have done, and still do.

There is no “sexy” marketing angle to that though.
