TRD PRO shocks and springs into a TRD Off-Road Premium

    Howdy Folks,

    I have the opportunity to buy from a buddy his used front and rear shocks/springs off his new ‘21 TRD PRO, he upgraded to a King setup.

    I’m hoping I can swap them onto my rig pretty simply but I have KDSS and of course he doesn’t so am I going to have an issue ?

    I’ve searched for similar questions and scoured google but I cannot find anything 100% definitive.

    I cannot figure out why it shouldn’t work; just the KDSS question haunts me ?

    Looks like it shouldn’t be an issue.
    From my understanding you really only start running into issues with the KDSS when you get crazy lift heights or get long travel kits that the hydraulic sway bar can’t accommodate to.

    Just curious why you spend money for TRD Fox suspension?

    Would it not be good to spend money for longer shocks that give you a lift? So you can go with bigger tires and build your 4Runner for some good trails?

    BTW I don't want KDSS on TRD PRo. Hope Toyota keep it simple.

    Well, the TRD PRO suspension, which has 250 miles on it, was offered to me for $1000. I figured this was an easy, and yes less expensive way, to add a little lift and add a great suspension setup…since it’s on the TRD PRO. I couldn’t really find anything for $1K that would do something similar ?

    I guess if it doesn’t work out I’m sure I could sell it all for $1K and do what you suggest ?

    It's pretty much plug-n-play for a 4Runner. I don't blame you for wanting to pick it up.

    I will say, however, I probably accomplished the same end result with Eibach Pro Truck Sport struts and rear shocks, using the stock springs. It's not as eye-catching as a Fox Pro setup, but probably rides as well, and levels the 4R for less $$$. But I've never been in a 4R with Fox suspension, so what do I know...

    Yes the TRDPRO Fox ride good on trails at stock height. I don't know how it would be when you lift. Also I doubt that it is capable of giving good flex in rear when you lift.

    As for the ride at stock height it's not comfy as a high end suspension like ELKA 2.5s.

    All I say is think again spending. Might be worth to spend on a longer shock body that is made to lift vs something made to run at stock height and try to add spacer or different spring to lift.

    For a lower cost even the Bilstien 5100 I have on my Limited give a good wheel flex in rear. I don't think front is a big deal as by design it doesn't have a good flex like rear solid axle.

    Just saying, try to spend right at the first time.

    you might need a 1/4 or 1/2 inch spacer on the front driver side from what i have read on the forum due to the lean if you don't care about the lean, you should be good to go.

    So this is completely random and I'm really unsure where to post this question but here goes. Are the fox TRD pro upper control arms a different size then what would come on say the standard 4Runner.

    I believe it's something to do with what @LandCruiser said. And saving money.

    I thought I had read that the PRO was originally supposed to come with KDSS, but it wouldn't work due to their manufacturing process.

    @cme4lyt you will actually have a superior setup to the PRO due to having KDSS AND the Fox shocks. Enjoy!

    The Pro was always meant to be paired with KDSS. Here's the concept truck on display:

    The problem arose when Toyota realized they could not include the Bilstein (now Fox) shocks in the parts mix at the Tahara plant in Japan. Not sure why, but if you've ever seen an automotive assembly line that is 100% utilized (Toyota pioneered this) there is not a lot of wiggle room for parts mix.

    All Pro trucks ship from Japan with steel wheels, factory shocks, and no roof rack.

    There is a TRD team at the port that adds the Pro stuff to the truck when it arrives. The problem that KDSS presents is that it's a much bigger pain in the ass to swap the shocks. You either have to be very careful about how you extend the hydraulic pistons to get barely enough room, or take everything almost completely apart. Those extra hours and consideration eat into the bottom line.

    In the end, it was cheaper to not include the KDSS at all. It is a superior system to the static swaybars that all of the other trucks have, because they're both thicker for on-road use and decouple for better articulation off-road. That's why the Land Cruiser uses it.

    You can also do some tricks to make it compatible with mid-travel upgrades- end link spacers, etc. If you're going to pull everything apart for long travel or a solid axle, you are better off without swaybars anyway.

    To pretend that the decision to not include it on the Pro was anything other than penny pinching is false.

    Did you end up installing the TRD fox coilovers? I'm in the same dilemma as you were. Curious of results and pics of end result would be a bonus. Thanks for your reply.
