Driving in blizzard conditions

Hey everyone we are under a blizzard warning and In a state of emergency here in Jersey. This will be my 1st time in the snow with my rig. Do you guys air down in the snow if so to what psi? Do you keep it in 4H or wait to start slipping? Any advice will be greatly appreciated thanks

 

Tires are the single biggest contributor to a good or bad snow day. If you're running the stock tires go slow, increase following and braking distances, don't air down, and keep it in 4H unless you're on dry pavement.

 

Unfortunately I'm still running the stock tires, which brings me to another question. How big of a tire can I run on a stock trail rim with no rubbing? Also do all A/T tires reduce your mpg by 2 mpg. I've been told this by someone whose running KO2s and also read it on tire rack under the KO2 reviews. The guy at the dealer told me to run Toyo open country and the mpg should t be that severe

 

The largest tire you can run without a lift and no rubbing is a 275/70/17.

Loss of MPG is based mostly on tire weight and tread type. The lighter the tire the less loss of MPG's you'll get.

I'm currently running Falken Wildpeak AT3W 285/70/17 which are 50lbs a piece and getting 17-18 mpg with 90% city driving and pretty "agressive" driving.

 

I've live in Ontario, Connecticut, Maine, Washington State and BC in my lifetime and have driven 4x4s since 1952. No need to air down if you have good tires but, in my opinion, the usual all-weather tires are not up to much. You need an all-terrain tire at least, something with good traction in mud, blood and shite. Good luck - Ted
