Who is getting on a list for Solar Octane?

I'm first on the list at two dealerships for a 2023 Solar Octane PRO. I'm thinking that the final year of the 5th gen in the special color will be a hot item. Predict I'll be able to drive it for a few years and get most of my money back.

Not a very wise move young pajuwah if you think a car is an investment. We are definitely in a bubble that is on the cusp of bursting (costco gas just hit 6 dollars by my house in socal). This was a massive once in a lifetime fluke so you'll be in for a major shock in a few years if you think the car market will be in the same boat it is in now

I'd never buy a new vehicle now or over the past year. The market is still more than a year from correcting itself. You will lose money, interest rates are not what they were even 6 months ago. I got 1.9% on a used 18OR in December. Now its 7.9%. I dont think the last year of a long in the tooth vehicle like the 5th gen will have any special meaning outside of groups like this no matter how hard the "influencers" try to make it feel special. They look like hacks pitching chicken shit trying to prop them up. Its just a color and the 40th is just some stickers. Huge disappointment on the 40th.

Well, I'm certainly not buying it as an investment. It'll be my daily driver, just like my current 2019 PRO. But, when buying a vehicle, it's good to buy one that is tops in residual value. The 4Runner, just like the Wrangler, are always at the top of the list in residual value. I think the final year of the tried and true 5th gen, especially in TRD PRO trim and in the special color will hold its value very well. Try to get your hands on an old FJ and see what that will cost you.

I don't think you'll lose money but these are not collector's vehicles so unless you are planning on sealing it underground for 30 years with no miles then there isn't going to be that much more of a payday versus any other trim of 4Runner.

With Pros the dealers will take most of that future profit upfront with markups so just focus on getting one at MSRP.

I debated but decided against. It’s going to be MSRP plus ?? Who knows. Honestly I can’t justify considering I have a 21 ORP under MSRP.

If you have tons of extra cash go for it.

I lost the itch given the current economic conditions and could afford it. But with inflation, energy costs soaring I am going to buckle down for a while. I am getting extremely concerned about this economy and just feel it’s not prudent for me anymore. Everyone is obviously different though. Wish you the best in your decision

Not buying one. Way too much $$$, and I love my '18 SR5 Prem anyway. But that solar octane color is beautiful for sure. I loved the inferno as well, and would've looked for one a bit harder if I hadn't stumbled upon my '18 for a price I would've been kicking myself for had I passed it up.

I'd say go for it, SR5, limited lose more value than TRD, and the Pros retain most value. After next year V6 4Runner will be kinda like FJ cruiser, the less you drive it, the more it's worth

Its a fad. EVeryone wanted to get outdoors during Covid and an FJ was an excellent entry level vehicle that soon everyone wanted. That curve will flatten. I am beginning to see it now. Take a look on Facebook marketplace and craigslist. Teardrop, overland and pop up tent trailers are hitting the market and cheap. People who should not have financed them now cant afford the fuel to take them out and are getting rid of them. I almost pulled the trigger on a 2017 Little Guy trailer. Smallest teardrop on the market. $800 locally. It wasnt practical for me and I see the market turning hard the longer this energy crisis is. I soon expect to see $15k overland trailers to pop up for 50% or more off retail. Its not gonna be pretty. Think about the Harley and custom bike eara in the late 2000's. Guys buying $60k bikes that they couldnt get $15k for with low miles.

Good point with the energy crisis may see a fire sale on all sorts of pickups/campers/boats etal.

My buddy scored big time back in 08 with gas at $4/gallon. If our recession gets bad enough and gas keeps going up it may be a great thing for people with cash to pick up some deals. My buddy bought a 1 year old Ram dually back in 2008 and a 1 year old 20ft fishing boat for a steal when the gas was crazy. He was a lucky one sitting on cash at the time.

It was blessing in disguise because a year later he got skin cancer and passed; so I am happy he got that boat and truck when he did.

I don't get it, if you currently have a 4runner, why not drive it into the ground before you trade it in for a new one. I mean shit I bought mine to put miles on im not getting rid of this 4runner until its unsafe to drive. Then I'll part it out :)

Anyway but the new orange is an awesome color. But it'll probably be way overpriced on the lot.

I love the Solar Octane color but since my 2019 TRD ORP only has 31K on it, I can't justify the cost to get the new one. My last 4 Runner had 229K on it when I sold it so I may see if I can get more of the one I have now.

Buy it because you want it (unless it's too expensive), and let the financial bit take care of itself.

Im on the allocation list for Solar Octane as well. My 2nd preference is white with the red interior.

If its more subtle like the inferno, maybe. If its insane highlighter red like the 22 PRO color, then a hard pass.

I'd be worried about unloading that thing down the road. It's a fad color, like that piss green color whatever it's called. An enthusiast might like it, but the vast majority of buyers out there don't want a loud, odd color.

I certainly understand all of your concerns. Both dealerships are offering it at MSRP. I'd be trading in my 2019 TRD PRO that is paid for and worth more than I paid for it 3 years ago, so the difference won't be that much.

Well, life is short so I like to trade in and get a new vehicle every 3 years. I try to buy vehicles that hold their value well, and I carry over the equity. I got my 2019 PRO under MSRP, for $45K. I believe current trade value is around $46k.

And the fj is holding its value because rust free ones are now rare, as well as finding one with less then 150,000 miles. And also because its a odd but cool toyota. Its to expensive to be entry level... entry level is like xterras, 4runners, frontiers and tacomas

I am on the list for one with my local dealership.
Having purchased four 4R's to date from them and this will be 5th, they will work with me.
The dealership did a "pre-trade" with my 2019 Limited.
They took my Limited very low miles (I wasn't using it) and basically gave me about ~3k less then I paid for it in 2019 (this de-risked the market moving down on my trade - and gave them a vehicle to sell right now).
Then dealership did a "pre-sales order" selling me the 2023 Pro at MSRP and applied my trade, so I did get the tax benefit of trading in.
I did have to sign a waiver stating that if the dealership wasn't allocated two Pro's in Solar Octane (I am 2nd in line) then they could substitute another color that I agree upon.
I also have the right to cancel and they will refund the "deposit" which is the value of my trade in the deal.

That would stink if they don’t get the allocation. Are Limiteds worth less I assume versus pro or ORP? I honestly have not paid attention.

Hope all works out for you.

    2022 Limited's with AWD and 3rd row (my 2019 config) MSRP @ $51,350.
2022 Pro has an MSRP of $54,135.

I know all 4Runner are in tight supply but Limited's are almost non-existent.
According to the dealer Toyota has had big supply chain issues with the JBL sound system.

Update....currently drive a 2019 Voodoo blue PRO. In January, got on the list for a 2022 magnetic grey PRO (hated the lime rush) as I knew it would take several months to get an allocation. Thought the 2022 was going to be the last year of the 5th gen. Fast forward to June, and we learn that 2023 will be the last year and they announce solar octane as the special color. Switch my request to a 2023 solar octane and am first on the list. BUT....TODAY....get a call from the dealership and am told they have an allocation for a 2022 Mag Grey PRO and I can have it if I want it. Ugh. Dilemma. Who knows what will happen in the future with this market. Financially I guess the 2022 would work out better as I'm sure there will be a price increase on the 2023 and I may have to wait another 6 months which means my trade will be worth less. That Solar Octane looks sweet though.

As much as I love Orange I am going to say HELL NO to paying 60k + for the color Orange when my 2016 Trail Premium does everything I could ever ask of it. Gonna have to say hard pass on just tossing money like that around for no good reason.
