As far as I can figure, the head unit on the 2021 is supposed to get OTA map updates. Right now it shows:
    Map version: 05-70-50 [2020-04-0]

When I select "update" it shows:
It was not possible to complete the update.
    Contact your dealer.

I will contact the dealer, but I wanted to come here first and ask if there was any advice? Is there anything I can do myself, or is this really just a dealer thing? All of my searching about map updates is for 2019 and earlier with micro SD card which this system doesn't have. I haven't been able to find anything useful on 2020 or later 4Runners.

And I know the first answer is going to be "use Google Maps." I do. I use Google maps and Apple maps for navigation. Built in nav is pretty useless. But I do find the maps and traffic info useful and don't always want to use the phone. I just want the damn map to update.

    Thanks.

I think for 2020-2022 model year, you have to have connected services. If i’m not mistaken, Toyota calls it “Dynamic Navigation System”. It will update firmware and maps OTA.

I thought I read that you put the update on a thumb drive a plug it in to the USB port.

My map version in my ‘21 Pro is 05-71-20 [2020-11-2]. When I select “update” I get the same message to contact dealer. I think map updates have to be done by dealer and I’m sure they will charge you.

And the link above by hvac guy is only for firmware updates. I had my system check OTA for updates and it said there were none. My audio version was 1122 and the nav was version 1110. I went to the website, entered my VIN and it said updates were available.

I followed directions on website using USB stick and everything updated. Now audio version 1162 and nav version 1150.

I am subscribed to the connected services and my map doesn't upgrade which is why I'm a little confused. I had assumed map updates were part of the subscription, how naive of me.
I have yet to reach out to the dealer but I'm expecting a hefty charge for the update which won't be worth it, I'm sure.

    Dynamic Navigation: Subscribed
    Remote Connect: Subscribed
    Safety Connect: Subscribed
    Destination Assist: Expired

I really have no use for Destination Assist since Siri and Google do that. To be honest Remote Connect is the only one I really need but
