I just bought a '16 Limited Pearl Blizzard 4Runner.. My first 4Runner and my first Toyota and so far I couldn't be happier. Looking for suggestions with this Pearl paint color regarding window tinting.. should I get the front windows to match the factory tint or go darker all the way around? Just didn't know how dark windows would look with this paint color.

Well it depends. Do you want factory tint all around, or darker?

Tint is going to look black regardless of paint color.

Here's what I realized about 2 minutes after having my front windows tinted to match the rest of the vehicle.....I can actually see the navigation/radio display on a sunny day. The difference was amazing.

If it's like the Tacoma was the local shop said 27, I've heard as high as 35%. I just asked the shop to match it and all was good.

Does anyone know if the factory tinted back windows have UV protection like aftermarket tint will have? I was told before when I tinted my Tacoma windows that they were just tinted and did not provide UV protection. Just wondering if anyone knew?

My guess is that someone wanted to sell you more window tint, but...I could be wrong. I am not a scientist, but I am thinking there cannot be too much difference between the amount of UV protection between factory tint and aftermarket tint of the same percentage. Again, I could be wrong. Can you put a dollar value on what you would pay to have your factory tint covered with aftermarket film?

I was under the impression that the glass itself is tinted so its not as if you are putting tint on top of tint you'd be putting tint on top of tinted glass...if that makes since. I can't remember the exact number but I tinted my front Tacoma windows at 15% or 20% and then had the back windows tinted to match.

I agree, the glass itself is tinted and you would not be applying more film over top of existing film. Unless someone is hypersensitive to UV rays, I can't imagine there is much difference between factory and aftermarket tint of the same percentage. But, I could be wrong.

In the case of my truck I wanted my front windows to be darker than the factory back so in order for my windows to match I needed to tint over the back ones as well. I will probably do the same on the 4runner. I would think that the UV protection on the windows would be better for the leather long term as well. I plan on having this 4runner for a while so I don't want the seats to start looking bad due to the sun.

I see. I guess I wouldn't know the difference if I had seen a vehicle with aftermarket tint installed over top of factory tinted windows. Maybe you can start a poll and ask if that's been done. (If you cared to know.)

Its not a big deal, I just really wanted to know about the UV protection, I'll probably just wind up spending the extra cash and getting all the windows tinted darker. It is for my wife and if she ever got pulled over she could probably just do what women do and get out of it anyways!

I dont think it is, in almost all cases you need to put tint in the rear to have matchung front, because the glass itself is darker, it has no UV protection, its just dark glass, and because of that it is hard to have matching front because of light passing through, that is what i have found out visiting some tint shops down here. But i am no expert so i could be wrong, but i dont think there is any uv protection.

That is very true. The difference in heat transfer between the rear factory privacy glass to my front 30% ceramic is drastic.

Seems like you guys are correct.

Per the interweb: (that is what my Dad calls it)

    Factory tint
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Factory tint
, commonly referred to as "Privacy Glass" is an electrical process called "deep dipping" that involves dying the inside of automotive glass with a dark pigment. Factory tint is standard on the rear half of most new trucks and SUV's. With a common visual light transmission (VLT) of 15%-26%, factory window tint is installed to provide passengers and personal items privacy from outsiders, hence the name privacy glass. Since most states have a VLT legal limit of around 35% for the front driver windows and windshield, factory tint is only applied to the rear half of vehicles windows to avoid breaking the law.[1]

    Contents
    [edit][/paste:font]
With a low VLT, the primary benefit of factory tint is to provide privacy for passengers and personal items. Unlike window film, factory tint, depending on the car manufacturer and year, does not provide the same ultraviolet (UV) protection or heat reduction qualities. Window film offers 99% UV protection against both UVA and UVB rays.[2] Factory tint provides protection against UVB rays because UVB rays cannot penetrate any kind of glass including non tinted glass.[3]

Ahh i knew it, but was not 100% sure this defiantly makes me want to go darker and tint the rear as well.

Well I have it scheduled be tinted next week.. they're going over the factory tint plus two front windows and strip all for $170 which I don't think is terrible. It's going to wind up being 5% all the way around

so you're getting 7 windows and the strip for $170, that would be a fantastic price out here. I think for my wife's Corolla it was about that and that has no strip on the windshield and 2 less windows

I love my tinted windows, I have 5% on top of the factory and its amazing. I didn't touch the front because its illegal here in CA... But I love the privacy and the way it looks. The only downside is that you really do have to get new reverse lights, I can't see out of my back windows at night to save my life. All I can see is headlights, but I never have to deal with bright lights in my eyes!

It's illegal in New York as well but you won't find too many troopers pulling you over for it. Now they get you with your annual inspection and make you take it off. Local tinting companies are offering peel and reapplication at a discount. I understand the reasoning to protect the police but when I get pulled over (very rare) I put all the windows down anyway.
I will continue to reapply it because I feel like I'm roasting driving on a hot summer's day. I NY!

I have ceramic tint 5% all around except the front.. it uses an airblue technology that is 80% uv protection.
