Tuners for the 4.0L?

    Does anyone know if they have created any tuners or chips for our 4.0L engine? Sporting a 2019 trd off road premium and would love to maximize the output of that engine. Appreciate any responses.

    Pedal Commander or Sprint booster. Zero HP gain but throttle response brings out what Toyota should have. Hit up Jason B on the other runner forum

    There is a guy on tacomaworld that has tunes for the tacoma 4.0, and he asked if there was interest in tunes for the 4R 4.0. Not sure if he ever started on tunes.
    You can always go supercharger route.

    As tempting as it sounds I'm not a fan of going that route. I don't know why but I feel as though it would be too much maintenance having one. Rather lean towards a plug and play type thing you know what I mean.

    Doesn't seem like there is much to gain on these engines with the plug and play solutions. For noticeable difference the engine needs bolt ons or supercharger. Also as far as maintenance, I don't think there is much. I think the supercharger itself is good for like 75-100k miles before maintenance is needed. Not from personal experience, just what I've gotten from reading on the forums.

    URD in Maryland does some tuning.

    Honestly tuning only seems effective if you upgrade some part of the intake or exhaust. URD sells a short header (to retain the cats), add to that an aftermarket exhaust and intake and you may be onto something. Aside from that I'm just not sold that it would be an efficient use of money.

    Crazy, I'm searching to see if there is a tuner before I take delivery of a 4runner and come across 2 year old thread, then I'm like "what is OV?" but it comes up as top on search and I see that 5 hours ago they announced something about finally releasing a tune or something associated with it for Year Models up to 2019 (sad, I'm getting a '22).

    Welcome to the forum Jeff. Look around on here and find the Pedal Commander threads. In those threads other devices will also be discussed. I, personally, have the PC and it is hands down the best thing I have done to mine. The difference is astonishing and it’s just baffling to think it’s only a plug-and-play electronic device. I’ll also tell you that I’m not one of the guys here who can do mods myself but this thing took like 15 minutes for me to install. Worth it for me.

    Glad to be here Robert, thanks! Ok I have been looking at those and similar, it's good to get some first hand endorsement so thanks for that - I did see a few reviews that gave me serious caution on PC but there are so many good reviews it's a tough call. How long have you been running with a PC? Will check out those threads pronto...

    There's a couple of options you have for the 2019 and older 4runners.
    Reflashes:
    OV Tune = Orange Virus Tune
    VR Tune = Vivid Racing

    and then theres the piggy backs:

    URD Maf Corrector = basically unit looks at your ignition maps and afr voltage and adjust it accordly. This is mapped before hand by listing your mods.

    and theres throttle modifiers:
    Pedal commander = adds more voltage as if you were stepping on the pedal more.
    Spring Booster = same as above


    me personally if you have a supercharger and not in California ... go with the reflash.

    if your a N/A then just get a piggy back in conjuction with a throttle modifier.

    I got it for Fathers Day so right around June 20th. I’ve had no issues whatsoever. The app is easy and I have established where I like the settings so I rarely even look at that now. BTW, mine is a 2021.

    Have you or anyone else in here installed a pedal commander, just ordered one for my 2020 trd off road and was curious if it actually helps with the eco mode or the sportier touch when needed, not that my truck is going to be doing pulls down a drag strip lol

    Circling back on this, I ended up with a Sprint Booster, waited until I had 1,000 miles on her, and wow it's really like a completely different vehicle - didn't tell the CFO about it and she noticed how much better it was when we merged onto Houston streets and freeways and asked "OK, what did you do to it :) ?? "

    There's some guys on the tacoma forums that do a KDMax tune. People over there RAVE about it. I have a couple buddies get it on their tacos and they LOVE it. Says it's a night and day difference on their trucks. Apparently, Toyota changed the ECU on the late 2019+ 4Runners. As soon as they release/crack the ECU on 2019+, I'm getting it done.

    HPTuners is rolling out support for 5th Gen T4R. 2016-2019 have been confirmed and tuned. Working to add additional years. No one can tune 2020+ yet, Toyota changed ECU security and no one has cracked it.

    Overland Tailor has a very nice HPTuner tune for the T4R. He’s done hundreds of unique custom tunes for the 2GT Tacoma and many of those lessons transfer to the T4R 4.0L. Only issue is no one has TCU (transmission control) access for the newer (2012+) T4R yet, so shift points and torque converter lock/unlock can’t be adjusted yet.

    I would like to see actual dyno numbers, before and after tunes on non supercharged engines.. I understand the butt dyno, but when you are spending 400 bucks on a tune, I want actual dyno results.

    Solid gains, mainly focused on the low RPM range where it’s most useful. Same techniques applied to the T4R ECU as there is significant commonality with the 4.0L Tacoma. All pulls above done on 91 octane fuel. Below in Green is a pull done to represent gains on 87 octane.

    It’s harder to get good dyno runs on the T4R due to limited TCU (transmission control) support. Typically a gear lock tune is used to prevent the vehicle from shifting during the run. S-mode can help but often the vehicle will downshift when the load gets high.

    The HPTuner tunes are currently available for 2015-2019 T4R’s.

    30 ft-lbs and 15 HP not too shabby for a software update. Considering CAI’s and exhaust make similar claims for equal or more $ and make more noise than actual gains.

    We can also tailor the throttle sensitivity for the user preferences. They use a “+” designation and the scale goes from + to ++++. For most vehicles, ++ is where people land. Have a guy on +++ but he likes it hot and is on 35’s and stock gears and armored up.
