This gives me a bit of breathing room as far as obtaining a 4Runner for myself. I am just not quite ready to buy, but was feeling pressured by the thought of the ‘23s coming out as 6th gens.

I am not interested in a 6th gen, with rumors that they will most likely be 4 cylinders with turbos, and what - 8, 9 or 10 speed transmissions? No thanks. I smell a lot a problems and unreliability issues coming with those.

i currently own a 2006 Tundra SR5 4WD Double Cab, and the transmission in that suits me just fine. I see no need for messing with the transmission by introducing more and more speeds. I live in the Texas hill country and have this fear that an 8, 9 or 10 speed transmission is going to want to hunt, search and wander and be indecisive as to what gear it wants to be in when climbing the hills on the highways around here.

I have a friend who recently purchased a new Nissan Frontier pickup truck, and he is complaining about this very problem from its 9 speed trans. (I think it’s 9 speed.) It can’t decide what gear to stay in on these hills.

I’m going to stay old school and go with the proven and reliable 5th gen 4Runner.

Having said that, I have a couple of questions- I’ve read comments here and there about people having paint problems with their new 4Runners? I have 2 color choices in mind for when my time comes to purchase: First choice: White. Second choice: Silver. This would be on an SR5 Premium.

I’ve looked at 4Runners on dealer lots, and store parking lots, etc. and I must confess I can not spot anything wrong with the paint on these vehicles? So what’s the deal exactly? If there is a paint problem, I would hope by the time the 2023s come out that the factory will have taken corrective measures to solve any paint problems.

Next- I find the location on the controls for the power windows and locks very strange for the 4Runners. Up on the top of the door sill right at the base of the window?? I think I am not going to like this. On my ‘06 Tundra, the controls are mid way down the door panel at the front of the armrest on the door. Is anyone having an issue with the location of their power window switches? It just seems they are up too high. Weird design there if you ask me.

Other than that, concerns for problems with paint, and a seemingly goofy location for those window controls, I’m looking forward to transitioning out of a pickup and in to a 4Runner SUV. I’ve owned pickups since 1993. Ready for a change.

I thought the same thing as you about the window controls. It looked out of place and up to high. I thought who designed this.

Honestly though I adjusted quickly. I can reach over and lower the window without looking. I think because we are sitting up higher it makes more sense. Anyway I over thought it.

As far as color I chose Silver. The whites I saw up here in Michigan show more rail dust and dirt etal quickly. Up here they all rust too if not cared for.

I saw some white ones I posted when I joined this forum that were used on a dealer lot with blemishes that were two years old.

I am not sure if white is better than silver in the Texas sun.

I would get on allocation list soon if you want one. I would hate to miss out. I agree with you about wanting this Gen

I've owned a few Toyota vehicles and can say that is the one dept they are lacking on quality no matter what color you get. Toyota's paint is simply not durable but with that being said I'd stick to the metallics. So out of the 2 choices you provided I'd go with silver. They do look great new but the Toyota paint compared to some of the other brands I've owned chip very easily. Not necessarily a deal breaker for me but it is what it is. I've owned a black Rav 4 and found it very difficult to detail. Also it chipped very easily. I feel like the metallics are a bit "harder" and resist chipping. I find the power window buttons not in the most ideal spot but think they look cool up there. Its not ergonomic but it doesnt really bother me. Thats just a matter of preference at that point.

I have a 2014 blizzard white limited. Not sure if the PO had it ceramic coated or not but other than a few chips on the front bumper and hood due to rocks, most likely, the paint is immaculate. Nice gloss and blemish free. The truck is 8+ years old and has spent it's entire life in central Texas. It stays much cooler inside the cab than my Delmonico red Ram 1500 for sure.

Every forum for every car I’ve owned has people complaining that the paint for X manufacturer is cheap and bad and chips too easily. I’d take it with a grain of salt. If you don’t want any rock chips put on PPF.

I got a used inferno 4Runner last month. I didn’t want to “get in line” for a new 4runner. I wanted something without safety sense, no push to start, no fancy key fob etc. I went with the pro & still saved $8k compared to a new base model SR5.

Prices are dropping on used trucks but interest rates are going up. I waited for a good presummer price drop & still got a great apr from USAA. Don’t wait too long if u want a brand new one. Toyota has limited the number of units coming out of its GX/4Runner plant!! The summer buying season is about to kick off & toyotathon in December might be your best bet. Good Luck - they’re all really nice but when you see the one you’ll know it!!

White and Silver are the two best colours for hiding dirt, scratches, swirls etc, I have owned both (currently have a Silver ORP, had a white Tacoma). I also have had the worst colour to get, midnight black (my previous ORP).

So never buy black - period.

As far as white/silver... Toyota Alpine/Super White is a single stage paint. Yes, that mean base and clear coat are 1 layer - I found that our when m,y detailer could not get some etched tree sap out of my Tacoma's hood. Take from that what you will.

Silver is arguably the most boring but it will still look good many years down the road, it's metallic and it's basically swirl camoflauge.

My blue shows every damn scratch and swirl, you look at it and anther appears before your eyes...and I pamper it, all microfiber if a cloth touches it & car washes are all touch less. Crazy.

yeah the nautical blue is very similar to black.

it's just a nightmare, you basically need a professional detailer to wash your truck otherwise it's swirl city. If it was a used 25 year old 4Runner I wouldn't care but on a brand new truck it's defeating.

Yep! My old Tahoe idc if it goes through a tree branch car wash, did the first hand wash with all microfiber products today on the runner and found 2 new scratches later in the day that were not previously there to my knowledge. Sucks. 20 + years old & all the touching washes it had and years of me using a shit sponge and towel to wash and dry and cleaning off with a push broom in winter that was some tough paint to not be to bad now...and off-roading.

The switch location is a bit odd, but you adapt quickly. The fact that the other controls are all still analog and easy to use makes up for it.

Mine is silver, and even when it's filthy it still looks clean. It also hides chips and scratches very well. On the other hand, when washed/waxed the metallic really shines.

Personally, I welcome a new powertrain, but your concerns are valid. Since you live where it's flat, the 4.0/5AT should be perfectly adequate. It's in the hills/mountains where it really shows it's weakness.

Odd but new to me I kind of dig it, but easily takes in water when opening window in rain / snow...I also love the analog cluster & controls for the HVAC

Fellow Buffalo dude. If you indeed plan on keeping that 4Runner, you should consider taking that thing to Buffalo Car Care. You won’t regret it. It really does depend on how important not having swirls is to you, because it’s not cheap. They have fully paint corrected and ceramic coated my blue car and lunar rock truck and there is not a single swirl on either vehicle. If you only use microfiber cloths and mitts like you’re saying and you make sure you wash that thing every week, it holds up.

We shall see, I have a appointment with the Regional engineer rep or whatever on the 9th...wondering the outcome of that. Would be nice to start fresh.

Range Rover has the switches there too. Its my preference. When you rest your arm on the sill, its perfection to use.

I agree. When I came from a Wrangler with the switches on the center dash, the 4R switches just felt right. When I get in anything but a Jeep or 4R they feel out of place or designed wrong.

The paint does seem to chip easily. I'd go with silver over white.

As mentioned above, the switches felt weird at first, but now I like where they are.

Will you marry me? DAMN I see one of these every day driving down my street.....I always wanted one when shopping, but the only two available in 2020 were salvage titles (I looked across the globe, BTW.)

Wrapping the whole front including the entire bumper (minus the grills of course), headlights, the hood including the scoop (all done from a single sheet of film) and the mirror caps was just under $2k. I also had ClearPlex windshield protection film installed $450. This has paid for itself two to three times over in the first 2 months of ownership. The windshield got hit hard by a rock at around 800 miles from new. Big gouge in the film but no broken glass. There were a few rock strikes after that. I'd say the ClearPlex is a solid investment as I'd prefer not to go through windshield replacement and possibly end up with aftermarket glass. I had the truck delivered to my detailer with 1mi on the odometer. They did paint correction/detail, ceramic coat, the PPF and ClearPlex as mentioned along with tinting the windshield and front side windows. My guy is not cheap but the attention to detail is incredible.

4R will always use 4th gear when climbing uphill, then frequently 3rd gear 4k rpm, then even 2nd gear 5k rpm, for cruising 60mph.
If your live near mountains such as the rockies, you will feel it. otherwise, it's ok.
The old engine really doesn't have enough torque, unless you use 91 octane gas.
For 1-2 more years, I will wait for 3.5v6 Turbo. Actually, 4 cylinder turbo works well on Wrangler, but 4R is much heavier and I don't think it will be.

white is really nice, but silver hides bug corpses better. dents and scratches are not the real problem.
