First post and first time 4Runner owner here.

I purchased a 2022 4Runner last month and ordered 17 inch Black TRD wheels from a parts distributor. On the phone the dealer quoted $120 to mount and balance. When I got there they said they forgot that the sensors weren’t interchangeable from the factory wheels, and it would be $1000 for compatible sensors and programming. I walked right out. I figure I’ll find somewhere else I suppose.

Does this even sound legit? Looking online, sensor sell for round $30-$40. I know dealer service departments jack up prices, but this seems like a mistake.

I just had the gloss grey trd wheels put on my 22 limited. Charged me $125 to break down my 5 20” wheels and install the sensors in the trd wheels. Even if you had to buy new sensors from Toyota they’re like $80 each.

Tire shop, but I called the dealer and multiple tire shops. All were $100 to $150 for 5.

Hold up are you saying they want $1000 for just sensors and install?

I would tell that place they're a bunch of turds.

I just got brand new sensors installed for $240 with a five year warranty from Discount Tire.

The TRD Pro wheels aren't some boutique wheel, that dealership just sucks. I'd actually love to see the invoice, with personal info redacted of course.

I requested a detailed estimate. I’ll post it if the offer it up. The only way it would possibly be close to a grand is if they were mistakenly including the wheels as well. They charge $210 per wheel. I picked them up from a wholesaler for $150.

I could see that with wheels, but if that's just sensors, those bad boys better be 24k gold plated and diamond encrusted haha

Had my '22 ORP wheels taken off and TRD wheels put on at the dealer. Sensors swapped over just fine. Didn't pay anything else besides mount and balance. Sounds like a buncha idiots at that dealership. Run away.

I find it hard to believe the TPMS sensors on a SR5 are incompatible with the TRD rims.

    But I could be mistaken.

That's absurd, I'd take them to Discount Tire or your regional equivalent

I'm sure this is correct, I believe the sensors from earlier years were not compatible, but I have the "older" pro wheels and I reused the sensors from my SR5 wheels.
@MajorFade I think they forgot that they forgot and they are full of shit. My tpms works fine, I never changed sensors.

2019 and older sensors are not compatible with 2020+ electronics, it has nothing to do with the wheels. People pull sensors and put them in aftermarket wheels all the time too. Discount Tire removed my 2020 SR5 sensors and put them in Pro wheels without issue or extra charge (I also bought new tires).

Dealer is an idiot or upselling.

Yup. Taking them into my local Goodyear tire shop. $30 per tire. When asked if I needed new sensors or reprogramming, I was told they've never had to before.

Yup, no problems moving the sensors since they are going on the same vehicle. OP will probably need to reset the sensor location since 2020 and newer show pressure at each wheel. I'd be surprised if the techs put each sensor back in its previous spot.

Local Goodyear did the deed for $150.

That's just about what my dealer in Vegas charged me to swap everything.

Find a new dealer. That's a load of horseshit. Programming means nothing in reality. plug in a ODB II and run it for 2 mins. And another $500 to mount your tires? You are being played. Ask for a print out or email for a cost breakdown. He isn't making any sense.

@MajorFade - you might want to let it be known which dealership that is so anyone in your area could avoid them at all costs. That's thievery.
