So I went back to discount tire for a rebalance. I asked specifically that they use the factory jack points on the frame. Then before I could stop them, they placed floor jacks under the rear upper link mounts and jacked the whole thing up from there. I’m stressed. These are thin metal. What should I be looking out for? I can’t see that they are obviously bent. What kind of response is warranted?

So what exactly is bent? Nothing is standing out in the picture.

We’re not supposed to Jack it up there? I’ve been doing it over 20 years.

I can’t tell that anything is obviously bent, but I don’t have a good point of comparison- I guess my question is more towards people with an experienced view of the vehicle’s weight and potential for damage to the mount itself, the bushing, the bolt, has anything been dangerously weakened, etc. I looked at another 4runner in the parking lot at work- the sides of the mount are flared out a little on that vehicle too. I guess I’m looking for something along the lines of “not a big deal to jack from there” or “likely ok but have Toyota inspect it for sure, there’s potential for damage”, or “sock it to Discount Tire right now, that’s an egregious and unforgivable error”…

Ah I see. Shouldn't be an issue with lifting on those points. I'd have to check the manual, but I doubt the factory lift points for the rear are on the frame since most jacks will not be able to lift the frame high enough for the tires to come off the ground.

I’m already feeling better. Thanks y’all. In the absence of experience, I’m a “follow the letter of the manual” guy. Also this is the first vehicle I’ve ever purchased new and I bought it with the intention of keeping it as long as it runs, so I’ll probably be unreasonably uptight about it until I learn more. Some healthy perspective is greatly appreciated. Hopefully this latest balance puts the steering wheel shake to rest and I can stay out of the shop and just enjoy the thing for a while

Are you going to be OK? Yes.

Should you jack the vehicle there, no. There are literally half a dozen places that are probably better.

Totally. I physically pointed to several of them. No idea why this was chosen out of the available options, and the store manager couldn’t explain it either. Hence my frustration with the experience.

Simmer down. Its ok. Dont panic. #kids.

It is an uber common jacking point Wranglers, pickups and more, and has been for millennia. The factory prefers X, Y, Z but that is primarily for safety sake on the side of the road. In a controlled environment, its fine.

    It's fine.

It's not weak metal because it's a suspension mount.

    Keep driving.

OK I'm a little disappointed that nobody jerked the OP's chain a little. This forum is really going downhill.

Guess you get that discount price because they don’t need to purchase and maintain real shop lifts lol

I don't even know if it made it uphill. This forum is very slow and non-active compared to others. My other forum moves so fast its hard to keep up with lol.

Just don’t put the Jack under the gas tank skid plate.
I did that and now there’s a big dent.

Hey now, tone it down you young whipper snapper! Us over-the-hill folks much prefer slow paced, but well thought out information and witty commentary.

We have no time for getting our bifocals out just to find the hidden x to close down the incessant commercial pop-ups on the “.org” website.

As to the OPs concern, I would worry about how pressure on the drag link mounts might tweak rear axle alignment and ultimately, thrust angle. I’m not saying that’s what would happen, just what I would worry about. Fair notice, I worry about a lot of things, even unnecessary things.

Maybe have the shop buy you some fancy adjustable drag links to compensate for potential tweakage.

It might be a little quiet in here, but, this is a good group. I am on Tacomaworld as well, and it's a lot more fast paced.

Definitely. OP, I’ll give you $10k for it right now but only if the gas tank is full.

Hah! that’s what I’m talking about. The good news: Discount Tire gave me a full refund for the tires. The bad news: steering wheel shake got even worse after they crushed the frame with their reckless jackage, so I just went ahead and sawed the truck in half. Done!

Holy cow, can’t believe I missed this. First of all, turn in your shade-tree mechanic card…

Secondly, has the tank fallen off yet?

I bought mine imperfect, it's still imperfect and even with extensive mods, it will always be imperfect. But its a joy to have and at night I sleep okay - even with it's imperfections....
