Looking for suggestions for a cargo box for our TRD pro roof rack. We’re moving across the country and need some extra room so we can car camp without unloading the whole back. Bags or carriers are fine. Anyone know if the SportRack vista XL will work? Hoping to not break the bank. Thanks!
(Please don’t suggest getting rid of roof rack. We like the Pro roof rack and bought it for our ORP)

it's a little expensive but I really like the Thule Motion XT. well made and it opens on either side. I had another one from sears (do they still exist?) that I paid only 150 for that lasted at least 10 years. Summit racing and jegs carry what appear to be that same style

I would check Marketplace. These things are so expensive to buy new, and they're usually on Marketplace for pretty cheap.

I only have experience with my Yakima skybox 16 but I'm a big fan. Waterproof, lockable, and I think I get better mileage with it than with a bare rack.

This is what I've been keeping a lookout for Marketplace, but apparently people really like them because they never pop up lol.

I remember waiting for one to pop up on craigslist but they were either resellers at full price, or fell through. I waited and ordered it during a big REI sale. Still expensive but it's definitely made road trips a lot easier.

I also have the Yakima sky box 16 and run it on the top position on the TRD Pro rack. Good luck with the move!

A little sideways question about the Yakima Skybox...can they be mounted to an ORP stock crossbars, or do you need the Yakima bars that clamp to the rails? Also, how well do they do in terms of dust proofing, and how do you secure your gear inside so you don't end up with a mess of shaken up gear if you travel some rough roads?

You definitely can mount to the stock crossbars. That is how I used to do it prior to me getting the pro rack. I will say, it’s a tad close to the actual roof, but not at all an issue. In regards to anything shaking up, I have never had an issue

How close does it get to the Shark Fin?

Close, but not on top of it. One thing to remember and look at is where it sits when you open the rear hatch.

Yes, rear hatch clearance is one reason I wouldn't look at one that's really long.
Damn, these things aren't cheap though, even used! Also considering a hitch mount metal platform type basket.

Good call on the hitch mount. I agree, my sky box fits just about right. I was lucky to find it used for $100. That was before the world went nutty in regards to pricing etc.

Rear cargo tray is a good idea, those things are still fairly cheap. You could always buy a large tote, and ratchet strap it down to the rack and lock it for a little bit of security. That'll probably be better for fuel economy as well.

I would look for a Yakima or Thule on Craigslist
