Do you refer to your 4Runner as a Truck, SUV, or Car?

None of the above. It is a "rig".

 

I believe you need to score a predetermined amount of "Bro points" before referring to your own 4Runner as a "rig."

 

Car.

Lots of people in my area and where I grew up have pick-up trucks. It can be confusing to refer to an SUV as a truck, but there are almost no negatives to calling it a car.

If people wanna call it a truck I'll roll with it, but I always default to car. SUV, body on frame SUV, if I wanna get into details. In a self deprecating fashion (not that it's bad) I refer to it as the minivan on occasion.

 

Truck, would be an insult to call our machines "SUV's" with all of the crossovers out there.

 

I just sold my two 2017 landcrusers which I never called a truck. The 4Runner feels like a truck to me( in a good way)

 

If you call it a truck do you call the back door a tailgate?

They should make the cargo area of the 4runner more like a truck bed. All the carpet and rubber seals and stuff is just too delicate for me. Should be painted steel and hard plastic. I've already torn up the rubber window seal in the back door from hauling lumber and the carpet smells like chainsaw oil and gas that I can't get out.

Plenty of full size "trucks" with 5-6' beds out there.

I keep my chainsaw in a tote along with the fuel and oil. It's nice, because I don't smell gas and oil while I'm driving.

I do agree that the cargo area could be more utilitarian, though! Tough rubber and plastic, no carpet to tear up.

Umm. So the Tundra crewmax and Tacoma are not trucks? If I was younger I would argue this until you concede but now I just say it is okay for others to be wrong. They will learn eventually.

Sounds like you use your 4Runner as a truck and it has battle scars to prove it. I bought a trailer because I was not about to destroy my 4Runner hauling lumber like that (done it before though). Bought a roof rack and used that for a while. Also did a gas run one time when we had deep snow. Gas smelt up the 4Runner for a good solid week. I learned my lesson. I put the gas cans in plastic crates or better gas cans that don’t leak at all.

 

I just say it to mess with them lol. It's hard to call my 4Runner a truck when I've driven trucks up to this point. It's an SUV because it don't have a tailgate to sit on and the floor is carpeted They need to make the back of the 4Runner more like a Tacoma with a topper like it was originally. The cargo area needs to be more rugged and it needs to have a fold down tailgate like a truck and a tip up back window like a Tacoma with the topper if that makes sense. That would be awesome

I really want to be able to pressure wash the back end out but I can't because the way it's made. I don't like having to clean it like the trunk of a car

 

It sounds like you want a Landcruiser, as they have a tailgate. I'll keep my hatch, because it provides a nice place to hang out when it's raining.

 

I do think the French doors on the Land cruiser would be better for me than the hatch but I'd still be beating my shins on the hitch and ball without a fold down lay flat tailgate

 

Been there, done that. . That's why the hitch lives inside the 4Runner except when I'm actually using it.

 

Wife borrowed mine 2 days ago=now it smells like potting soil!

I just call it "the Toyota". It's the only one we have. Before that, it was "the Jeep". When I had multiple Jeeps, they had names - Bender, Buster, Elmo, etc.

Imagine being able to drop a regular truck tailgate on the back of the 4Runner and dropping the back seats and loading it up with lumber like a regular truck bed. It would be like having a taco with a Toyota quality topper and climate controlled bed I think I really just want another Tacoma

 

I wonder if you bought the wrong vehicle for your use? Probably a Tacoma with a shell would have been better for you? The 4Runner is what it is.

 

Yep it just needs to be a little more work truck and a little less grocery getter. They need an SR version for folks that want truck bed functionality

 

If the cab of the Tacoma was like the 4Runner I would have never got rid of it. Tacoma pancake cab was like riding on a sled

I agree the 4Runner is more comfortable and that’s why my wife pushed/encouraged me to get the runner. I do miss my truck already, for truck things that I don’t want in the runner.

 

I do this already, just not the tailgate part.

 

I'm sorry if anyone here wanted a pickup truck and bought a 4Runner. It's unfortunate that you don't have the vehicle you want, but that's not a flaw with the 4Runner.

I had two 4Runners and then bought a Tacoma. I couldn't get back into a 4Runner soon enough! There were nice things about the Tacoma. If those things were very important to me, I'd still have it.

 

I call mine a truck, my son calls it a monster truck lol what ever it is it's awesome, new segment, AUT Awesome Utility Truck ha ha
