Quick question. How far are you driving your 4R after the estimated range hits zero miles? In my old truck I still had 2 gallons left once I hit zero to empty, so I just kept cruising for another 25 to 30 miles. Just curious how much further I can drive before I finally have to stop being lazy and just gas up. Thanks.

How about testing that out for us?

Oh, and let us know how much the tow & repair bill is.

Sometimes I wonder why, but then I remember it is Friday after all.

What's the repair bill for when running out of gas?

I ran mine to 5 miles 'til empty once. If the gas pump is to believed, I still had 2 gals. in the tank.

car forums are littered with people who just have to know the answer to this question. i've never heard of any one of them damaging their car in the process. if you must know, just bring a gallon or two of gas with you on your ride.

myself, i usually fill up when i hit 1/4 full.

I figured most newer cars would have some sort of preventative measures for damage to the vehicle if one were to run empty, like some sort of fuel pump shut off so it doesn't keep running upon hitting empty. Not really sure, but actual serious damage to a car that ran out of gas is news to me.

I've never ran out myself. I am just curious. But damage to the engine because of no fuel is something I never heard of. Figured you'd just run out and the engine cuts off.

I believe some people were able to go 50 miles but I've never tried or will try. Actually I never have that display up.

Fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel bath and the fuel running through. Not having fuel means the pump gets stuck with the heat which can burn it out (burn the motor up not catch fire) but I'm not sure how often that happens. We already have faulty fuel pumps so I'm not trying it out.

I ran my 04 limited out of gas twice, never had any issues. I've also ran a Cherokee out of gas 3 times and no issues there either.
I'm not saying it won't do any damage (I've never had any) but some people act like their car might burst into flames on the spot if you run out.

OP, I'd take this guy's advice. He can give you tips on how to pass time while you're waiting on the side of the road for someone to bring you gas.

    Good luck!

Neither do I. When the gauge shows close to 'E' I figure it's time to fill up. I don't pay any attention to all the 'miles 'til empty' or 'average miles per gallon', etc. I've had those displays turned off for over 2 years.

I suppose the answer to the OP's question might be helpful if you found yourself halfway between known gas stations that were 100+ miles apart, and running on empty...

More like the motor can burn out as in die out, not catch the vehicle on fire. Still doesn't make sense as to why anyone can't keep gas in their tank.

Next time the light goes off just fill up and you'll have a pretty good idea. On mine there is more than 3.2g to go after the display goes to zero. It's useful to know that I can drive another 45 miles after showing zero if needed for some reason.

Would not recommend, but I have driven 20 miles past empty before in the middle of nowhere Wyoming.

I once got my 2020 Limited down to the point the computer said zero miles remaining, and the tank took less than 21 gallons to fill. So more than 2 gallons left.

The catch on fire was sarcasm, still some people act like it is the worse thing in the world. (again a little sarcasm).
There are reasons people run out of gas though...

To answer OP's question, my old 4th gen, the gas light went on with about 2 gallons left in the tank. I haven't been able to find that info out on a 5th gen, but I also have not searched that info.
I will say it appears the 5th gen has less than 2 gallons when the light comes on.

Yeah. I think catastrophic damage from running out of fuel once isn’t really that common.

To me, figuring out just how far I can push it isn’t really a concern as the potential risk of doing so isn’t worth the reward.

Running out of gas a couple times should be fine although the risk exists. Doing it more often could definitely be harmful for the car. Not even just running out of gas but also running very very low on gas (again if it’s done often). All the debris that sink at the bottom of the tank will get sucked up where only fuel should go.

with that said, no need to start sweating every time the light turns on. There’s plenty of distance left to go to a gas station during your daily commute (as long as your commute is not 100 miles)

At 0 miles to empty I usually have to put in 19.5-20 gallons, so there's still 3+ gallons in the tank. I usually get fuel before that, though.

I really wouldn't make a habit out of driving much past 0 miles to empty. But, I also don't think there's anything wrong with waiting until the light comes on. I have consistently waited until the light was on in several vehicles without any issues.

Weird. I had an '03, and usually drove until the light came on, and usually put in 18 gallons or so.

There's about 5 gallons in my '19 when the light comes on.

I always fill up immediately light comes up. Driving till empty increases risk of clogging injectors. I believe.
Gas is sold by volume. Early morning fill-ups.

With the inflation these days I fill up at a half tank usually to try to make myself feel better at the pump, but I only go through 1/4 of a tank a week unless I take a trip somewhere.

I went about 19 miles past 0 a few weeks ago by accident (was in a spot where I sure I would find a station soon, but it was 45 or 50 miles of nothing. I had been counting once the counter Zero'd out, and it was 19 miles - I was VERY close to turning around and backtracking when I saw the sign!). When I filled up, STILL only got 21.5 gallons in it - probably could have gone another 25 miles or so.
