I have spent the last couple days checking out Crutchfield trying to decide what to get for speakers. I don't have a current plan to switch the headunit, or install an amp. I have almost bought a couple different sets, but just not sure what I want to do.

    Thoughts or ideas, ma

What are you expecting to get with new speakers?

Better sound than the stock, I’m not too picky, but definitely not happy with stock once I start using the volume past 15ish. Ultimately, I’m looking good quality built speakers that will sound cleaner once the volume goes up to 20. I’m not an audio nut or anything, but the stock speakers just don’t have it and I believe they will last.

Yeah man, it’s not so much the speakers as it is the radio. You have the JBL?

Here’s the thing. People assume it will sound better with aftermarket speakers, and often they find it’s worse. They’ll select something absolutely not complimentary to the rest of the system and lose volume and fullness. Then, the rabbit hole kicks off, looking for the solution and trying to fix it by buying more stuff and it just ends up being a way larger project than it was meant to be at the start.

Having the JBL system would make it more tricky because you need to find something that works with the OEM crossover points as well.

If you do not have the JBL system I’ve found that the Audison Prima 6x9 component set is a good replacement for the front speakers. They are incredibly efficient and pretty accurate. The matching 6.5” coaxials can go in the rear. Frankly though, it’s not worth spending any money on rears unless you fix the rear signal.

These speakers will not fix how shitty the radio sounds, however. The best you can do is, with proper door treatment and mounting brackets, have a quality of sound that the OEM radio limits you to.

I see a lot of guys find a deal and throw in some Kickers, call it an upgrade and pretend it’s better for a while. Later on you see the same guy adding an amp and DSP and all kinds of stuff, or opting for the TTunes/OEM+ system.

If you REALLY want an upgrade you’ll need something that remedies the OEM tune. The EQ, channel attenuation, and time alignment all need to be addressed to get a really good result.

Ya, I don’t want to go down the rabbit hole, I’ve read a few places the rears don’t give much anyways. Non JBL system, I don’t want add stuff at this point, I know he HU is junk, maybe in 5 years I’ll be willing to replace it. I’ve been thinking 800 would be my max budget to replace all 8 speakers at this point.

Did not know Audison made a 6x9 set. Last week, I had Morel Tempo Ultras (F/R), Morel amplifier, Dynamat, and DSP installed on my ‘21.
I went into it bent on using Focal, but their upper tier does not seem to offer 6x9’s in components.
