My 2022 T4R

New owner of a white T4R Pro. Got it early this year. Despite of high gas prices, I'm loving every bit of it.

 

I did not really like the TRD Exhaust. To me its too loud and drowning. So I decided to replace it with an OEM non-TRD exhaust. I have to transfer the 3-hole flange to retain the side TRD tail pipe. Other than that, it's a direct bolt on.

 

The 2022 has Lo and Hi beam in one LED Bulb. The DRL is still a yellowish halogen lamps that are wired in series. Thanks to this site I have confirmed that making a sub-harness which is easy to make, I was able to install LED 9005 bulbs from Diode Dynamics. (HP48).

Like what was shown in other threads, I got some 9005 harness extension from Amazon.




I did not like the connector on the bulb side so I got these,



Just wired them like shown below,



Final harness:



Verified working LED (DD HP48). I have also confirmed that these DD HP48 are not polarity sensitive. As long as one side is positive and the other is grounded they will light up.




Today, 12/02/2023, I added a vinyl hood scoop decal to help reduce the glare. I also added custom printed TRD Pro decal on each side.

 

That’s a sweet setup.. you should put together some kits and sell them .

 

I think my 2022 Limited has the same headlights, thanks OP for figuring it out.

Looks like it's plug and play and maybe the other wire clamps to somewhere on the body for ground?

 

Yes its plug and play. Just need the ground wire to be bolted to the body/metal part of the car. Nothing to be done on the driver side except to replace the bulb.

 

Congrats on the new rig! Couldn’t agree more on muffler. I’m in process of going to the normal 4Runner muffler on mine.

Just a note on your bulb modification….This changes the bulbs from series to parallel and thus changes the voltage from 6v to full 12v to each bulb. Now the bulbs will be at full brightness when they are on and no different in brightness than if they were hi beam. So now your DRL’s are effectively hi beams now. Even during the day these will be bright and can bother drivers in front of you.

I swapped over to LED’s in my ‘14 DRL’s and effectively had the same thing happen. I was told by friends driving in front of me they were bright. I got rid of them as a result. And a parent with a 4Runner at my kids school has done the same thing and I agree they can be bright and not comfortable to look at, particularly in a car that is lower to the ground.

There is another thread where some, including myself, have used a LED bulb from aux beam that will give you the whiter color while working at the 6v and not be at full brightness.

 

On the 2022 and 2021 model, the inner bulbs doesn’t function as Hi-beams. They only light up as DRLs. Yes, the supply voltage now will be 12v. The DD HP48 are LED bulbs that are designed to have low output lumens. I think they only output 250 lumens at 12V, so they are perfect for DRL.

 

Did not know that about the HP48 bulbs. Cool.

 

I strongly agree that the Pro exhaust system is annoying and senseless!

 

Can you clarify if you need 2 harnesses? Seemed in the other post you said you made 2, or at least bought 2. But here you say nothing needs to be done on driver side.

The other odd thing, if im seeing this right, is you have 2 female ends on your harness?? The bulb is female, so how does that work??

Edit: wait, I see, those blue connectors are male with a shroud around them, ok, that makes more sense now lol

 

Not totally true, the pro muffler is annoying, the side exit trd tip is awesome!!

 

Thanks for taking the time to document and post. I ordered the harness extender as well as the blue male connector along with the Diode Dynamics HP48 H11 bulbs. I'll be putting together a harness like yours. From what I read, only one harness is required but I'll end up with two. When I'm done I'll update this post in case someone wants the second harness.

 

How come that rig is so clean, even underneath after months of ownership?

hahaha. This is my first 4runner. I use to drive BMWs that i keep very clean, in and out. Its really hard for me seeing my cars dirty. The day will come…

 

You will love the look of the white DRLs. It makes the 4runner look more current.

 

Glad you figured that out. The blue harness are just for preference. They are more like oem and seem would last longer. Yes. just one harness is needed.

 

Also, after the swap, i’m able to enjoy and appreciate the premium audio.

 

Thanks @emacTR4 I built my harness using the parts you listed and installed the Diode Dynamic HP48 9005 bulbs. Love the led DRL! Since the harnesses come in pairs I ended up with two. I have this unused one that's ready to use and I'm happy to pay it forward to another 2020 and beyond TRD Pro owner who wants it. I will ship it for $20 to anyone that wants it. All you'll need are HP48 9005 LED bulbs from Diode Dynamics.

Newbie here… and I feel like I’m missing something. How is it that you will only need one harness on the LED DRL modification? I’m not understanding what this harness is actually doing. Can anyone explain this in clear, simple terms assuming I know next to nothing?

 

For the '20 and beyond LED headlight equipped 4Runners, Toyota did not fully redesign the headlight housing to convert from halogen to LED. The reflector that's closest to the midline of the vehicle used to house the high beam bulbs. In order to repurpose these for DRL use, they changed the wiring to these two bulbs to series which halves the voltage to just 6v. This way, the light emitted from the high beam housing is attenuated enough to be used as a DRL. By running these bulbs at 6v, they also extended their useful life as DRLs are on all the time (unless turned off by the user).

Members of this forum discovered that a 9005 LED bulb could be installed in place of the halogen units but at 6v, their output was greatly diminished. So, this harness makes it so the DRLs receive 12v and by using a Diode Dynamics HP48 9005 fog light bulb which has a low lumen output (less than 260 lumens) at 12v, you can have LED DRLs that run at a usable intensity that is not so bright so as to be a nuisance to other drivers. Pretty clever members we have here.

I vaguely remember having learned these in high school but I don't recall anything at all.

So today I went ahead and unplug the passenger stock connector from the 9005 socket and the driver side AND passenger side DRL both stopped working, which confirms they are in series.

I'm curious too how exactly this harness converts in series to parallel to bring up the voltage

 

Thank you for the clear and concise answer! Very much appreciated. I’m coming from Jeep and was more willing to experiment with that than I am my 4Runner. I made some questionable mods with the jeep… this seems easy and completely reversible- just wanted to understand it more.

The wiring diagram for 20+ model years shows how Toyota added that pink wire, deleted a power wire from the Left high beam fuse, and deleted a ground wire from the Right side to implement the series headlight connections for the DRL.

You have to keep in mind the codes for the wiring differences according to this note chart:
∗13 : Halogen Headlight Type
∗14 : From Aug. 2020 Production High LED Type Headlight
∗15 : From Aug. 2020 Production High Halogen Type Headlight
∗16 : Before Aug. 2020 Production

The harness mod re-connects the power and ground for a parallel circuit.
