What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Went to start on a gmrs radion install, but got distracted by the fact I never took care of some unfinished business after my Warn bumper install.

The straps that helped tie the bumper to the frame interfered with with the swaybars a bit, which limited their upward movement in the sway bushings. Got the grinder out and took care of that!

 

Just a few personal touches to make life easier hauling dogs!

Question about that hatch strut: the liftsupportsdept website is a little confusing. Did you have to contact them by email to get the proper part number for your application, an attached ladder?

 

Is that giant rear cargo tray from weathertech?

 

I did contact them, just to make sure I got the right ones (first using the IM on the website, then I called from work. Both times they were super friendly and helpful) . The valves aren’t pipe threat so where the bottom is where there gonna be turned. Had to grind my valves down to get them to orient right. Have replaced the schrade valve once. And replaced the fill cap 4 times cause the pressure relieve valves leak.2 of the plastic clips stopped holding the hose. All within one summer of use. I will tell you the water gets nice and hot lol

I got the ARB compressor installed. Don't ask how i dit it. I got a lot of help and suggest you do the same if you are not handy.

 

Man that stinks. You would think Yakima would make a better product that can withstand the rigors of what we do. I will say they have updated the Roadshower repeatedly (I think they are on their 5th or 6th iteration?) so hopefully those things have been fixed?

If I remember.

 

Setup the shower with the curtains and ran the water (without showering) in the garage. The shower curtain is purposely upside down to secure the grommets to the ground with tent pegs as needed and the other end has magnets, which allows the curtain(s) to be used elsewhere, like at the side door for the port-a-potty, or hanging to dry. While the intent is to capture and recycle the water (our city water is recycled and treated from worse) that might not be as doable when the wind is blowing. Some days water will be captured and some days not, and that's okay. In the garage, I did not want water everywhere and thus tucked the curtains into the pan to capture the water. Do I want to be showering and mucking up the cooking area ground? No. The vehicle can be moved. Not to mention, while cooking is a daily chore. Daily showering is not the plan. The pan (this one a pizza dough pan) comes from the sink, which stows the induction stove. A mat (x1-2) under the pan provides cushion when on dirt/rocky ground to prevent cracking the pan (this a theory that has yet to be tested) when stepping on it. The pan filled with water is a bit unstable to carry to the side of the vehicle where the water is siphoned back into the tank. Thus, poured the pan water into the bucket which is easier to carry, and then siphoned it back into the water tank through a 0.2-micron filter and back through a second time before exiting any faucet. Extra, the enclosed hatch area can be used for changing as well. Seems like a lot of work? Can be. But so was bathing out of a canteen cup heated up on the exhaust of an M-113 APC, M-2 Bradley, or M-1 Abrams. And was not a daily occurrence then either. However, this setup, unlike the Ninja Foodi and electric heater, allows every component to have more than one use thus cutting down on components brought along or attached to the outside of the vehicle during any trip.

Also took the opportunity to assess the accuracy of the water level monitor. Water removed and return at 2.5 and 6 gals were correlated with the monitor as 78% and 46% of ~10.6 gal tank and back to 100% each after returned. That's pretty consistent and just shy of accurate, despite the Front Runner footwell tank being odd-shaped.

 

Wow! That is a lot to go thru! I am thinking a national membership to Planet Fitness for $29 will work for my showering needs. Heading out west to CO & UT for a mtn bike trip in the Fall from MD. There is a Planet Fitness in Bentonville, AR and Grand Junction, CO. No annual membership fee / cancel anytime!

 

Have you considered one of these. I have been using the same one for 20 years. Simple, cheap and works decent enough as long as the sun shines.
