So my 2022 TRD ORP service light is on and says "oil service", but my dealer is telling me it's not an oil service, just a tire rotation. My odometer is at 4,800. What's the deal? I have aftermarket wheels and tires and plan to do my own rotations every 5k. Should I rotate my own tires and reset the light? I don't feel like leaving my vehicle all day for a tire rotation and I certainly don't want to sit at the dealer for two hours waiting.

I agree with Fritz, that free service might end up costing you in the long run.

I am unable to do my own change and was thinking of just asking the service to charge me and have a more “senior mechanic” do the work. Gosh hope they will do it ok.

Rotating tires isn't rocket science, any garage or tire shop should do it, the one near me charges 25 bucks for a rotation.

Sorry I mistyped for myself I was thinking oil change vs tire rotation.

I don’t think I will need to rotate tires often. I will probably only drive my 4R 1,500-2,000 miles tops per year.

Sorry Lara did not intend to high Jack your thread here.

Oh I see, I thought we were on the subject of tire rotations. I get not having the facilities to change your own oil, if I couldn't I would find a independent garage, and bring my own oil. They may charge you a little more, but at least you get it done with the materials that you want.

I enjoy changing my own oil, I actually did it the other day. I live in apartment though, I just dragged my ramps out and do it in the street. Luckily I live on a pretty wide street that's not very busy, haha.

You’re right the topic was tire rotation and I was thinking about needing to do an oil change this spring and inadvertently changed the topic on accident thinking of mechanics at dealers and other comments I have read here.

Any interest in coming to MIchigan and changing oil for a walleye fishing trip

Kind of a long drive from RI, otherwise I'd be happy to help, haha.

Yeah, the thing that would worry me about an oil change at the dealer is the fact that the skid plate needs to be removed. I bought mine used, and it was missing the skid plates. I figured it got tossed to make oil changes easier. I was half right, turns out that four of the bolts were sheered off in their holes. As you can imagine, that was a lot of fun to deal with when I was trying to install my RCI skid plates.

Thanks Trail Runnah yeah I have read about the skid plate and dealers skipping steps. I will be mentioning it for sure and hopefully watching the tech or at least get to chat with that person ahead of time.

If one feels like the dealer is the place to go for oil changes, the safest bet is to remove the front skid prior to the visit. That would take away any chance for them to foul up the removal and/or replacement. But add to that stories of loose drain plugs, dinged up wheels and/or over torqued lug nuts from tire rotations, scratched paint from one of their 'complimentary car washes', you get why people skip the 'free' Toyota Care. I'm sure their are decent dealer service places out there...I haven't found one yet. Once the Toyota dealership I purchased my 2013 Tacoma and a 2004 Jeep Wrangler from did an oil change on the Jeep. Several months later I opened the hood and found the oil fill cap sitting on the fender well where they put it after never having replaced it months before.
