5 Speed Markup?

Hi guys, I'm a previous Gen 4 owner and am looking to get back into the family with a Gen 2 or 3. I'd really love to get a 5 speed, but am seeing some markup that I don't think the market supports, but curious what members here think. Is there generally a markup for a Gen 2 or 3 5 speed?

For example, I saw one posted on CL today, in Arizona, 1998 SR5 5 speed with under 170k miles for $15k. KBB puts it in about the $5k range, so I think he's probably way off the mark at $15k. I'd probably pay a bit of markup, maybe $6k total if it's pretty clean, but not an extra $9-10k.

Any thoughts? Are older 4Runners getting much markup these days?

The used vehicle market is a little crazy right now. Have you checked Auto Trader, Bring A Trailer, Edmunds, or any of the other advertisers?

 

5 speed manual 3rd gens are rare. Really sought after for off-roading.

3rd Gens are the most bullet proof 4-Runners ever made.

The markup is real and surprises me everyday.

That being said. You need to look towards the southern states. Still tons on the road down here and for sale.

 

I was told, whether it was accurate or not I can't say, that a manual transmission was an extra $5,000.00 right on top.

When I bought my 99, I payed 5K for it, and saw another one, same area (Colorado), for $12,000.00. The dealer I bought mine off of was definitely distressed. He realized his mistake juuust exactly too late. Our check had cleared that morning
Shipping was another thousand. Worth every penny, too. Less than it would have cost us to fly up to pick it up, let alone drive back.

Its very real in California. I personally wouldn't sell mine with the 5 speed 4x4 with no rust for under 10k in California, your not going to find another one easily and that stacks it in the sellers favor. I have kept mine stock, finding one unmolested is even more difficult too. This is only for the third gens, the manual isn't all that rare on the 2nd gens.

Personally if someone totaled my 3rd gen and I had to buy another 4runner, I wouldn't buy the third gen manual at the current inflated prices. The used car market is going bonkers (like the housing market has been for over a decade), and the mix of it becoming classic plus the fact that manual SUVs that dont suck are a rare thing has made the price shoot up the last year. I would go for a nice 2nd gen and leave enough budget for the 3vz issues. The second gen doesn't look worse, the only thing that people hate is that stupid engine toyota put in a majority of them.

 

Realize this an old thread, but one like you described in May just sold on bring a trailer for $26k…with roll up windows. From Az….so hope you got yours!

Not a SR5 Limited but what a great find!

 

Red flags everywhere! First they are running 2 different sets of tires on a 4wd vehicle, a big no no on a 4wd vehicle. 2nd they live in Virginia and there is nothing about the underside of the vehicle. I'm sure that frame is caked in rust if they aren't mentioning it, if it was good then they would say no rust and knock the price up a few k. The antenna is not original, they've done a mod to it because that is not how it came. Oh and there is 4 photos, not enough at all

 

Mismatched tires the same size are not going to hurt. It looks like the seller matched them front and back. I see it as something to look at but not necessarily a red flag. There are some picky AWD cars out there that I would keep matched but I would never own those cars.

 

And its an Auto.

 

Did you ever find your Gen 3? I may be in the market to sell my 2000 4WD, 5 speed, rear dif lock equipped SR5 with 164,500 miles on it. I’d be asking $15,500. PM me for photos and more info. I just purchased a new Tundra.

 

I see plenty of gen 3's still in use...and a few for sale...in all kinds of shape....depending on your budget, and needs..I get offers for my '97 almost every week...so interest is still there...in my region ( mid south-Memphis,Nashville,etc)
