Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
Talking about how I hate how the 5th gen 4Runner looks got me thinking, I really hate how the 4Runner looks.

Specifically the stupid bugeye headlights. They look like the eyes of a praying mantis if a child drew a picture of a praying mantis and his or her mom praised it way too much. Then the kid grew up, became a Toyota designer, and took it way too far.

Then there's the TSS brick on my 2020 which is LAZY. But at least I don't have a 2022 with the camera on the front. The front camera reminds me of... This is a super specific reference but if you've ever been to a Kinokuniya store and they had a case of those little naked cherub figures with their ding dongs hanging out, the front camera of the 2022 reminds me of cherub ding dong.

The NONFUNCTIONAL and light reflecting hood scoop is dumb. Thank goodness I wasn't stupid enough to fall for that one :D Seriously, the fact that it blinds you with sunlight is metaphorical salt on the wound. You paid for that junk :D

The spoiler on the back is so dumb. "Look at me, I'm Lightning McQueen, I go fast!" But this is hardly unique to the 4Runner. My neighbor's Honda minivan has the same stupid thing. I just have to laugh at it.

The big Toyota logo and 4Runner badging on the back is so incredibly gaudy. It's like Mega Blocks. Previous gen 4Runners had much less nauseating badging.

Did you see those schmucks with Limiteds or TRD Sports with those 22 inch rims? They're the kind of gold diggers that Steel Panther write songs about :D

This one's totally universal to Toyota. Their logo. Whoop dee doo. You guys used to make sewing machines 100 years ago. Now your wussy sewing machine logo is all over my rugged vehicle. I didn't put the heritage grill on my SR5 because I wanted to ride the coattails of Pros. I wanted to get rid of the stupid logo!

But seriously, I wouldn't trade my 4Runner for anything. Do I love it? Do I hate it? In the immortal words of Al Bundy, "Love, hate. Look, we're a family, what's the difference?"

Sing it, brother! In fact the whole front end looks like an anime mecha designer’s nightmare. The 4th Gen front end was so much cleaner.

Lazy is the right word. They should have put the radar behind the logo. That would have shown some class.

I’ll disagree with you on this one. The spoiler provides a tidy place for the rear wiper to retract into. And I think the aerodynamics of the spoiler help keep dust and exhaust out when the rear window is down.

This as been a beef of mine forever. Tall rims and low profile tires on a 4Runner, or any other offroad vehicle, is an insult to the vehicle’s capabilities.

Yep. The triple oval is in need of a serious update.

Yes. Love it. Warts and all.

At least it’s not like Ford. I’ve always hated that damn blue oval.

:laugh::laugh: The OP post is spot on!

Toyota managed to hide the radar in the logo on our 18 Highlander.

You’d think a spoiler might draw in air, and that might be what you tried first to ensure the rear window sucks out air. But you wouldn’t know if that actually works until you verify it.

As it stands, having the rear open any more than a few inches actually draws exhaust and road dust INTO the cabin, not out. That spoiler is only on there for looks. Then the they figured they could mount the wiper in it.

I like the looks of it. Just wish it didnt suck in so much crap.

I think the front end of the 2010 to 2013 is a little too blocky, and the 2014 to present. Looks like there are specifically trying to go for some kind of angry anime character.

I totally blame whoever came out with that first ugly body kit for the Eclipse back in the late '90s. That type of vehicle got popular, they made the fast and furious movies, and then by the end of the 00s every Asian vehicle needed to look like it was angry with a big gaping maw.

I do prefer the look of the earlier 5th gen's, if their tastefully modded. Of course. I have a 13 Trail, so I guess I'm a little biased. But previous to owning this vehicle I did think the early ones were kind of ugly.

I do think that as old as this design is, it really does look good from the A pillar back. I think the proportions are good, and I really like the body lines, even though they stick out a little much for off-roading. It looks to me like they use the same track width of the smaller 4th gen, and just plopped the bigger 5G body on it.

My biggest gripe with it is the 4 liter/5A. That thing was meh even in 2010. They should have left a V8 option.

(Cue thatbassguy to tell me I'm wrong :D )

Interesting thread. Love it or hate it, at least our runners don’t look like every other SUV on the road. A lot of vehicles look identical and you have to look at the hood emblem to tell what it is. And thankfully we don’t have that big ugly Lexus grill.

I think in ten years when SUVs look even more rounded, generic and generally ugly 5th gens will be universally hailed as classics. 2010-2013 is take or leave for sure by 2014+ non-limiteds, idk, I think it get's the point of the 4Runner across.

If you want 4 different badges on your liftgate with random marketing babble letters and numbers like RX450 LX AMG M4 GTXi be my guest but 4Runner is a timeless, original and clever nameplate, centered on hatch handle in big F U letters so you don't forget and a simple 3 oval logo to let you know whoever drives this vehicle has good taste and is smart with money.

At least that spoiler hides the rear wiper which on almost every other SUV, even high end ones just sits there looking like a cheap piece of crap.

the scoop is non-functional sure but at least I can still see out of my 4Runner in all directions unlike the ridiculous visibility in some SUVs where apparently the goal is create a sense of claustrophobia on the freeway.

I know we are all kidding here but 5th gen gets so much crap despite looking way better than 99% of SUVs being sold today. Does anyone seriously think any of these look better than the current 4Runner? maybe setup an appointment with your eye doctor if so.

I remember when pokemon face came out. I actually liked the early 5th gen look, so I was disappointed with the new look. No biggie I thought, maybe the next model a few years down the line will look better lol. I got tired of waiting haha
