Hello all. I have recently purchased a 3rd gen 4runner that was obnoxiously loud. The exhaust system from what I could see was a stock cat and a flowmaster super 10. That was all. I thought by replacing the small flowmaster with a decent size magnaflow would solve the issue, but the car is still pretty loud. Any tips or exhaust systems this fine community can recommend? I recently checked for leaks, and there were some coming from the o2 sensors, but I have since reinstalled them without leaks. I also have an ultra quiet vibrant resonator from Amazon, but I'm hesitant to install until I can get a little more information about If I should. Thank you.

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
My 87 4Runner (which I just sold!) was on it's 3rd muffler. Second O2 sensor.
I am NO good at welding on exhaust systems, so I took it to Midas. The first time in Yuma. I pulled in, and they said "Bet you need a new muffler." "How'd you know?" I asked. "We heard you coming 3 blocks away!" they were laughing, though.

Second one was here in K. Falls. I took it in, they put a new one in for free. AND inspected the entire system from the head back. I love lifetime warranties!

Anywho, both times they put in the Midas equivalent of the OEM muffler. Both times the muffler had cracks all around the input pipe, and the worse they got, the louder it got. Once they welded a new muffler in, it went right back to the volume it was when I bought it.
Not my problem, anymore, though. Given I've had the 87 4Runner since 97, I think that's a pretty good record. In Yuma I did a lot of bouncing around out in the desert, and that can get pretty rough. Fun, though. Dusty, but fun :D
I suspect that's why the 4Runner was on it's 3rd muffler, at only 174,000 miles, and my pickup is still on it's factory installed muffler, even though it's got 372,000 on it. The pickup, which I bought in 88, never went boony hopping, and as dry as Yuma is, rust wasn't a factor. I am very happy with how well it's lasted.

I'm not sure about the later generations of Toyotas, but I know the first gen Toy's exhaust systems seem to have a small problem with rough treatment. Maybe it's the way they're hung, I don't know.

Anywho, I wish you the very best of luck. Have fun!

This looks like it has the 14" body magnaflow muffler. If you want to make it significantly quieter Id suggest a bigger body like a 18" or even 24" body depending on your taste. The 14s will make the v6 very noticeable even at cruising speeds.
