    Hello All,

Two things, first, I changed my oil and filter today after only 4600 miles since new, it was disgustingly dirty! I am glad I didn't wait til the "free" service at the dealer at 10K.

Second and more important, I may have, alright I did, put a bit more in than I should have in the amount of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch past the full mark on the dipstick. Is this a big concern? I put in exactly 6.6 quarts but didn't account for anything that may have still been in the engine.

I know I should have checked it before adding that last .6 quart but I got lazy.

    What do you guys think?

Thanks and go easy on me please.

10k is fine just looking at oil and calling it dirty doesn't make sense. 10k with any brand of synthetic. The small amount you over filled isn't a concern.

I'd drain a little out of it to get it in range on the dipstick. Better to be on the safe side...

Unless you did a lab test at home, just because it “looked dirty” doesn’t mean it wasn’t functioning properly. Plenty of black stone lab tests show that 10k intervals are perfectly fine. I always put 6.6qts in, after I let the engine drain for a bit. Dipstick is hard to read, but usually is level.

I did my first at 1k on both of my 4Runners. The metal that came out from the filter was a lot! I have always changed oil early the first few. Every piece of equipment I own has never burned or used oil.

I would drain a bit out. Just my unwanted opinion.

You can always extract some via the dip stick tube if you have the proper equipment rather then fussing with accidentally dumping it all out of the pan.

When checking the level, get the truck warm. Shut it down, take the dipstick out and let the truck sit for 5 mins. Insert and read level.

Send your oil to Blackstone if you want a proper analysis of when you should change your oil. Color really means nothing and folks here who change it at 3000 or 5000 mile intervals and have never sent their oil in are just burning money.

Getting your oil analyzed from Blackstone is a good suggestion. I send off oil samples for both my Jeep JK and my 4R. Last one for my 4R had 6.6k on the oil sample and they suggested going to 8.7k for next oil change.

For me it was more important to see if the engine is wearing well than maximizing my oil change intervals.

I don’t even check level anymore. I just drain on level surface and add 6.5-6.6. A smidge extra won’t hurt. The dipstick is hugely unreliable

Funny this was posted, I was wondering the same thing...the dealer just did my first change at 1000 miles & I checked when I got home and looked to watery / clear & all over the dip stick that I couldn’t tell if it was slightly over the max fill dot. I was also parked slightly downhill in my drive way (more oil towards front of pan). Gonna drive it a day or 2 get it on level ground and recheck. I got charged for 7 quarts so hoping some dipshit didn’t put in all 7 quarts. You would think they do enough changes on our engines to know but who knows. First time I had someone else do my oil change in 8 years (first new vehicle). 0w20 seems like water compared to 5w-30. My Tahoe used oil so never gave a damn if it was a bit over, it went down n e ways haha.

Now that you will be changing your own oil consider getting a Fumoto or Valvomax drain valve to make it easier. And the aluminum oil filter housing. There are threads on the site describing them.

With an oil valve you can also cleanly drain out a few ounces and send it off to Blackstone for an analysis of how much oil life is left.

After I started doing my oil changes I bought the ValvoMax drain kit (oil pan). Awesome build quality, easy to use and has a threaded cover cap that the other quick drain systems don't have. Only once did I have an accident but that was operator error. You might want to look at this system, priced right and build right.

If I put 6.6 quarts in after an oil and filter change, it will immediately read a little high on the dipstick.

After starting the engine and letting the oil cycle through everything, it will read a little below the top line.

I can put about 6.9 quarts in for it to read to the top line of the dipstick after cycling.

Perhaps you read the dipstick prematurely without cycling oil through everything first?

The free dealer oil change is at 10,000 miles. At the 5,000 interval they rotate the tires and do a fluid check.

I requested my dealer to do the free oil change at 5k and they did. I don't think they care when you do it, they just wont do more free ones than what they give.

You loose a free tire rotation if you do them early thats it I think
