My girlfriend has a 2018 TRD off road 4runner. The stock setup for the air intake seems to be pretty decent, especially since its coming from what appears to be the fender wall. I was looking into trying to upgrade the air intake, and the one I hear/see the most is the S&B CAI. Which seems to go into the same location just use a bigger box for air intake.

Reason I wanted to try and improve the air intake was mainly for in hopes of a little improvement of MPG as she likes to have the "cool looking tires", knobby mud/snow tires because of the look, even in the summer. We do live in Western NY so had a set of snow tires as well. Can't convince her to get summer tires since we don't do any off roading really, most that has been done is driving through some yard to get to a field or when towing the pop up camper to the campsite (if wanna call that off roading :p). Also any extra little bit of power that could help with towing be nice too.

I would think that if the Toyota engineers thought they could squeeze a little more mpg out of the 4Runner by increasing the airbox volume, they would have done it. Just my opinion.

Ditch the knobies and get soem AT's. That would help the most.

So basically you guys have the same ideas as I was feeling. Like I said...there no convincing changing them tires out...I'd prefer just some summer tires considering don't really go off roading and goes down the highway more. Thought I'd check to see opinions on if would be worth it...was a way to battle the knobies and get little better MPG.

There’s pretty much no way to squeeze out more MPG’s out of 4runners than when they’re stock. Best one would be a driver mod, take it easy on the skinny pedal. If you want an increase of power look into a supercharger.

Yup. Intake and/or exhaust are just noise makers really. Actually, my intake didn't even add any noise below 4000 RPM which is why I had to add exhaust. ;)

Stick with lightweight tires in stock size if you're after MPG. You can get some off road looking tires in 265/70-17 size that shouldn't affect mpg much.

Just curious - are you looking to mitigate the effects of the tires said girlfriend is currently running, or ones she thinks she wants to put on?

Ones that are already on. Won't budge for summer tires.

Welcome from Wisconsin! While some cai's might add some "noise" they do very little for performance, unless you do engine mods to accompany the cai. To get some power cams change might be necessary and cylinder head work. Neither of which are cost effective. Now don't forget the trans, it will also like mods. Much easier to get some A/T tires, call it good, and have fun with the 4Runner. Enjoy and again, welcome.

I haven’t towed anything since I installed a Pedal Commander but holy shit does it make it more responsive. Best mod I’ve done so far.

Go to afepower.com they show the mileage gain and the dyno results this will help a little with mpg. And if this doesnt produce the results your looking for you can always re gear your differentials. However none of this is cheap.
