Don't blame me, I voted for Trump.
I just purchased and installed a Stant 10504 locking gas cap. First year, going back from 2021 that Stant lists a cap for a 4Runner is 2017 and nothing for 2018-21. So, I then looked up (parts.Toyota.com.)Toyota part no. for a 2017 4Runner cap (77310A) then looked up for a 2021 4Runner same 77310A. So far no issues.

Ugh! 2021 and now a gas shortage??? I. Am about to order full skid plate coverage so now I need to worry about locking cap, tank being drilled into and protecting the cat! Leave my rig alone.

I bought a locking cap for my '19 SR5 and it's worked flawlessly ever since. I recently went back to the same Autozone to get a cap for my '22 ORP. They had one in stock, but it wasn't the same as my '19 one. I got it anyway and within 3 days, it was throwing codes for my Multi Terrain Select (it disabled it) and 1 other code...along with the check engine light and "take me to your dealer, now!" code.

I took off the '22 cap and put the stock one back on (and cleared the code) and it's been fine since. I'm gonna get one like my '19 has and see if that does it. It's the one with the flat, chrome sliding cover over the key hole.

I like the idea of a locking gas cap but was concerned about reports of an improper seal causing a CEL.

I hate to burst anyones bubble, but I saw a news report last week that bottom feeders are now just simply drilling a hole in the bottom of peoples gas tanks to steal gas.

I guess it’s a two for one crime. While they are under there stealing the cat they can also get the gas too.

No one is going to siphon your gas. They’re just going to use a carbide drill to punch through your gas tank and whatever armor you think is going to prevent them from doing it.

We have family friends who just last week had a hole drilled in the gas tank and the gas stolen while their truck was at a garage for servicing. Bottom feeder scum lowlifes are everywhere these days.

It’s the same theory as why bother to lock your house front door. It keeps some thieves out but a determined burglar won’t pick the lock they just smash in the door.

And a locking gas cap makes people feel better.

Yeh, my 3rd gen has a locking door. Why would they do it that long ago and not now?
Sure, if someone really wanted to, they could pry it open. At least it's a deterrent.

I would argue it’s substantially easier to drill the tank than try to siphon it, especially with modern cars.

I just took a look underneath. Yeah, it’s pretty easy to crawl under and get a drill into the tank. Now, about the logistics of squirting fuel and getting a shallow bucket or gas can in place to catch most of it…
    What a mess. Desperate SOBs.

Not to mention most drills still use brushed motors and those bastards have a tendency to spark.

not having a locking door was a shock to me when i first filled up my 4r. i spent 5 minutes looking for the interior latch at the costco line but couldnt find it lmao. i wish it would at least lock when the vehicle is locked though, i thought it was standard on all cars up until now. it's also something no reviews ever really talk about so i never paid attention to that while researching. my 4r is always garaged and i live in a decent area, but sad to see that there are scums who are stealing people's gas.

    All of them.
Don’t modern Toyota have a filter inside the filler neck that also aids in preventing a cyphon hose from reaching the tank?

I'm certain that if someone is going to siphon your tank that a latched door will only mean that you end up with no gas plus a damaged gas door after they pry it open with a screwdriver.
